It’s Never Too Early for the Holidays

Halloween is just around the corner and my candy supply is about one third gone! Good thing I purchased the “fun” size… I don’t feel too guilty. Everyone is excited for trick or treaters to visit and then we move on to all the cherished recipes for Thanksgiving and then – boom, the holiday season is here!

Many people do not appreciate how early Christmas décor shows up in stores. The first year Patina was in business, my partner Kim and I declared (foolishly I might add), “we are not decorating for the holidays until after Thanksgiving.” Boy, were we naïve! There are several reasons to display and sell décor as early as most retailers do:

Believe it or not, there are very organized people who want to purchase gifts and décor for the holidays much earlier than the rest of us even have it on our radar.

It takes a lot of effort, creativity, and time to deck out a store as well as your home with all the trimmings and after all that work, one wants to be able to appreciate it longer than just a week.

From a business perspective, summer sales can be rather slow, and owners hope they can make up some of their losses during the holidays.

Some of the more altruistic reasons include:

  • Celebration and Tradition. This helps people connect with their cultural heritage and the spirit of the holiday season.

  • Bringing People Together. This involves lots of group effort, and most times can be very magical in itself.

  • Fostering Anticipation. This is especially for the “littles” and as most parents know we ride that wave of the elves seeing everything and reporting to Santa up until the big day!

  • Boosting Community Spirit. When homes, streets, and businesses are decked out with festive displays, it creates a strong sense of community and belonging.

Patina is thrilled to present our Holiday Reveal on November 2, from 6 to 8 pm. Please join us to share the excitement of this year’s decorations, check out our gift selections and enjoy delicious appetizers and drinks. And bring a friend!

Red Barn Mercantile, just around the corner from us, will have their holiday reveal on the same evening giving you the opportunity to be super-efficient and visit both stores!

Amanda Mertins was born in Ohio and graduated the University of Maryland with a degree in Economics. She started moving and editing furniture and accessories while in grade school and hasn’t stopped since. She enjoys baking desserts and playing with her grandchildren.

Kim Weiler was born in Pennsylvania and graduated the University of the Arts with a degree in graphic design. Upon graduating, she was immediately hired by one of her professors at the Katz Wheeler Design firm. She loves design, gardening, sweet tea and all French bulldogs.

Amanda and Kim are excellent complements to one another-one could even say the Yin and Yang of design. Being very different people but with interconnected forces is the reason their partnership continues to flourish.
