New Year’s Eve is second in the “anything goes” attitude only to Halloween. This is the holiday to have fun with makeup…but still look like a person. (I see you, Halloween, with your fawn makeup and general shenanigans.) One of my favorite things about New Year’s Eve is that glitter inevitably makes a big appearance in eye makeup and cheek highlight alike.
Step One: Eye base, per usual. Smooth glitter is cool. Clumpy, creasing glitter is tacky. And we are not tacky, my friends! Apply a wash of skin tone-correct shadow, or a thin layer of powder foundation all over the lid, from lashes to brows on top of the eye primer of your choice. Make a soft crease with a neutral powder, like Kevyn Aucoin The Sculpting Powder, in the shade of your choosing. (Mine is Medium!)
Step Two: Smudgy liner. Smudge a dark liner, preferably black or grey, into your lash line. Don’t be shy about it — it should stand up to the glitter we’re about to put on! For a smokier look, continue the liner all the way around the eyes, applying liberally along the lash line and waterline. Smoke out with a small brush.
Step Three: Glitter! Use a little of the Stila Magnificent Metals primer (or a couple drops of saline solution) to wet your small, flat brush, before dipping it lightly into the Magnificent Metals color of your choosing. Gently press the glitter on top of the rest of your eye look, starting in the middle of the lid, and smoothing out in either direction, so the concentration is on the middle of the lid. Touch up the liner, if it looks uneven.
Step Four: Clean up and mascara. Use some Rilastil Micellar Solution on a cotton pad you’ve folded in half and sweep the flat edge in an upward motion under each eye, starting under the inner corners and ending on the temples. This will remove all shadow and glitter fallout, and keep the eye looking lifted, rather than heavy. Curl your lashes, then apply a volumizing lash primer and two coats of your favorite mascara. Don’t forget your bottom lashes!
Step Five: Do your face. Apply a great primer all over (NYE is a long night, guys!), and use your beautyblender to stipple your perfect shade of long-wear foundation over your full face. Conceal where needed, and add some shadow under your cheekbones and along the sides of your nose with Kevyn Aucoin The Liquid Contour Wand in your appropriate color. (Again, mine is Medium, but it also comes in Deep and Light.) Blend everything well.
Step Six: Color in! Sweep a little bright blush along your cheekbones and swirl a powder highlighter overtop. Use your favorite The BrowGal Skinny Eyebrow Pencil to touch up your brows and top with clear eyebrow gel. Finish your look with a not-too-bold liquid lipstick, such as Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in a color like Patina or Dolce — dark enough to stand up to a bold eye, but not so deep as to distract from the gorgeous drama on your lids.
Enjoy and stay safe this New Year’s Eve!
