Last month I wrote my love letter to Italy. As far as places go to visit, I think Italy should be at the top of everyone’s list. I even dream about packing up and moving there for a month or so one summer with my kids. When it comes to a place to live, however, there is no place I would rather be than right here in Alexandria, Virginia.
I must confess, this is a change of heart from when I moved here in 1999. As I drove across the crummy old Wilson Bridge, newly married at the age of 25, Brad and I laughed that we would never be here long enough to see the new bridge finished since Northern Virginia would just be our temporary home for a few years. Ten years later I sat in my house on South Fairfax Street and listened to the old bridge implode and we had another chuckle at the inaccuracy of our youthful hubris. Almost another 10 years have gone by and here I sit, in a new zip code, 22301, but still an Alexandrian.
I have always said when it comes to life, I fell in the honey pot and Alexandria has been a big part of that sweetness. Brad and I have grown from being just the two of us to a symmetrical family of two kids, two dogs (RIP Mosby) and each owning our own businesses in Alexandria. The economy has seen its ups and downs but we have both been blessed to continue to grow our companies and have the most amazing people work with us. Life is good.
The friendships I have with my co-workers past and present, with customers, and with fellow business owners are what have made me feel so much like a part of this community. Until I opened my store in 2003 I still felt like a fish out of water. When I moved here from Ohio and drove on the Beltway I literally shook with fear. This Midwestern girl felt so out of place on the East Coast in almost every way, even after being here a few years.
Now I can’t imagine being anywhere else. Alexandria is like a small town. I feel like no matter what restaurant or dry cleaner I visit, I see a familiar face. This is my home.
So I figured what better way to celebrate the 14-year anniversary of The Shoe Hive and the one year anniversary of The Hive than to throw a party, of course, but also celebrate some of the many reasons we love Alexandria. We’ll have classes in the courtyard (sign up below) followed by local treats, a cocktail party, and prizes, all representing the best of Alexandria. Oh, and 20 percent off Thursday, September 21 through Sunday, September 24, plus a free gift with purchase. Details below…
