Listen up, Weather Forecast: it’s fall. F-A-L-L. Sweater weather. Pumpkin spice latte weather. Pumpkin patch weather. Pumpkin EVERYTHING weather. And it’s time we start acting like it, because these warmer days have a way of tricking us into thinking we have much more time before the holidays and the bitterly cold, don’t-want-to-be-outside weather than we really do! Hot or not, it’s time to embrace the season, and one of the best ways to get going on that is to stop by Nalls Produce.
A small but bustling business located off Beulah Road that has been in operation since 1961, Nalls is the perfect place to go for all things local produce. Cary Nalls, who started the business as a roadside stand with his grandfather when he was a teenager, has longstanding relationships with many local farms and sources local product whenever possible. This means he travels frequently to pick up vegetables and other produce while his daughter, Valerie, manages the operation and his wife, Sharon, does the majority of the bookkeeping. Employees I spoke to while I was there recently said they love working at Nalls because it’s just different working for a small, family-run business — more fun and more personal — and the numerous returning clients make it even more rewarding, especially during pumpkin and Christmas tree seasons.
When browsing at Nalls, you can find products ranging from pecan pumpkin butter and pecan apple butter, moonshine jelly, candles, avocados, local sweet potatoes, butternut squash, corn, ice cream, BBQ sauce, “Nallspice,” plants galore (including Redskins-themed floral arrangements), and much more, but their biggest seller by far at this time of year is pumpkins. (And I mean “biggest” quite literally: they had a 1,700-lb pumpkin last year!) Nalls is “very particular about pumpkins,” one employee told me, and carefully selects and stocks countless varieties of specialty pumpkins up on Pumpkin Hill.
Just wandering around at Nalls put me in a festive mood, and I walked out with five different kinds of pumpkins to display at my house. It’s so much fun looking through all the varieties that it’s hard to resist! Also, seeing all the under-10 crowd getting so excited as they run around in the play area, hunt for pennies in the Penny Hut, and squeal with happiness along with Penny the celebrity pig, all while surrounded by pumpkins and hay stacks and all things fall, it’s impossible not to catch the autumn buzz.
Stop by Nalls for pumpkins (life hack: they boost curb appeal at this time of year) after seeing our nearby listing at 5794 Valley View Drive. We’ll have it open for another open house soon, and topping it off with a trip to Nalls will be the perfect fall-inspired Sunday Funday.
