Pro Tip: The Right Way to Bronze

Bronzer is one of those products that people either do way too much of or are so intimidated by that they’ve never touched it. It can be such a great addition to your makeup wardrobe, though! I think a lot of people’s trepidation comes from the fact that they don’t realize there are so many ways to wear bronzer. You don’t have to be the spokesperson for an overly-orange visage to enjoy a good bronze now and again.

If you like a sun-kissed glow

Try a softly shimmering bronzer in a shade barely darker than your skin tone. Use a fan brush or fluffy blush brush to lightly sweep the color across the places sunlight would touch: tops of your cheeks, tip of your nose, top of your forehead, end of your chin. You’ll look like you just stepped off of Beautiful Beach. A basic guideline is to make a big ‘3’ on the side of your face, to get the shape right.

If you like a good contoured cheek

Use a matte bronzer that’s a couple shades darker than your skin tone. Use either a fan brush or small, fluffy brush with a rounded tip. For contouring, I actually love to use an eyeshadow crease brush. Suck in your cheeks, and blend the bronzer in the hollow underneath. You can also sweep some around the parts of your hairline you would rather minimize, down either side of the bridge of your nose to slim it, and just at the jawline to give your face a more softly ovular shape.

If you have really rosy skin

Opt for bronzer instead of blush! Many bronzers have much more gold or orange in them than even a brown-toned blush, so if rosiness is a problem you’d like to solve, a yellow-based bronzer could give you a soft bit of color on your cheeks without making you feel like you enhanced your redness. Simply apply bronzer the way you’d apply your blush!

If you have a really pigmented face and a really pale neck

A bronzer in the same tone as your face should do the trick. Our faces shield our necks, kind of like nature’s umbrella. Use a densely-bristled brush, like a powder foundation brush or traditional bronzer brush, and work bronzer into the neck in circular motions, so you get smooth coverage. It’s a lot easier to blend than applying foundation to your neck.
