Restaurant Report: Duck Donuts

I know it’s spring now and we should therefore be working on our beach bods, but Duck Donuts just put a wrench in my plans—and I’m okay with it. New to Bradlee Shopping Center near the new Michael’s, Duck Donuts is part of a chain that is expanding rapidly throughout the East Coast. Their newest Northern Virginia location is sure to be a hit, if the fact that they sold $1,700 worth of donuts in their first hour open on Thursday of last week and had a line out the door at 6am on Friday is any indication.

It was already part of my plan to stop by on Friday, but I received confirmation that I needed to stick to that plan when I saw ducks wading in a puddle outside of my house. Duck Donuts, ducks in front of my house…if that’s not a sign, I don’t know what is. The fact that it was raining on Friday made the need for a donut-shaped pick-me-up all the more necessary.

When you go in, they give you a form to fill out saying how many donuts you want, what kind, and what toppings you want on them. You can also let them know that you’d like them to choose an assortment for you. I got a combination of bare, powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, glazed, chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry (my little sister Paige’s favorite) donuts and chose to forego the toppings. Customizing your donuts is almost as much fun as eating them, and you can choose from rainbow or chocolate sprinkles, coconut, peanuts, bacon, and Oreos, and hot fudge, blackberry, raspberry, and salted caramel drizzles.

Eat them while they’re warm and they practically melt in your mouth. A perfect treat on rainy days, sunny days, warm days, cold days, at any time of day, allow me to welcome Duck Donuts to the neighborhood and encourage you to stop by immediately!
