seven simple ways to declutter your home

Wouldn’t you love to come home to a clean and organized home every day? And not have to cringe when you walk by a certain spot in your home that drives you up the wall? We know clutter accumulates over the years and sometimes the task at hand seems too large to tackle. We have been there and it isn’t easy! But after a few years of experience we have figured out some simple steps that help to get us organized and to keep it that way.

1. Tackle One Room at a Time: It can be so easy to get overwhelmed when trying to get organized. It is key to stay focused and tackle one room at a time. Start small and work your way around the entire house until you have obtained organizational victory. We have found that setting small realistic goals is most helpful to us and we find we actually achieve them when we do it this way. And when you have completed your task, it feels extremely rewarding to cross it off your to-do list!

2. Purge Seasonally: This is a hard one for many people but absolutely necessary if you want to be organized and maintain it. We recommend that you purge things seasonally. When spring rolls around and you start pulling your spring and summer clothes out and putting your winter sweaters away, look through both sets of clothing and make sure you plan to wear them again. A good rule of thumb is, if you haven’t worn it in over a year and it isn’t a “staple piece” then get rid of it! We know that some things are hard to let go of but you have to make room for the new as well! When sorting through your things it helps to make 4 separate piles; keep, donate, sell and trash. This will help you decipher what to do with each pile and it will make you feel better about where it is going.

3. Storage Solutions: It is important that you make sure everything has a home. Sort through your things and make piles of like items and then put them in a container all together. You can use super cute boxes, like these cow-hide boxes from our shop or you can use containers with labels, so everyone knows where it is and what is in it. You can get as creative as you want with this and it all doesn’t have to be so matchy-matchy. We found so many cute storage solutions on Pinterest, really the options are endless.

4. Matching Hangers: This can make a world of difference in a closet and while you are changing out your hangers, try color coordinating your clothing and purge the things you haven’t worn in the past year. Our favorite hangers to use are the non-slip Huggable Hangers that you can find at The Container Store but you can also find similar at any big box store. This is such a small change that really can dramatically improve the appearance of your closet.

5. Clean up Cords: This is an easy way to make your space look neat and organized. Exposed cords that are behind your TV or under your desk can be such an eye sore and all it takes are a few twisty ties to do the trick. There are also a ton of different gadgets you can buy at the Container Store or online that will help disguise your cords.

6. Designate a Space for Important Papers and Mail: Speaking from experience, we know these sort of things can accumulate quickly and can turn into a real mess. We have figured out a system in our homes that works and we make sure everyone in the house is on the same page. Unopened mail has a designated spot and so does the opened/important mail. This keeps us from getting confused about what can and can’t be thrown away. Using cute bins, boxes or even having a dedicated piece of furniture for mail can help better organize things and no one would be the wiser that you had stacks of paper hidden inside them!

7. Store Items Where You Use Them: Being organized is wonderful until you have no idea where your things are! Make sure when you are organizing your belongings to put them in a functional place and where they will be utilized. Nothing is worse than not knowing where anything is! So when you do a big re-organize try to get your family involved, that way everyone is on the same page.
