My Secret Ingredient to Building Strength from Anywhere: The Pull Up Band
I’ll admit it. I too can get caught up in the “I need to go to the gym” mentality to get in a good workout. With our goal as midlife women to get in 5-6 strength training sessions per week, it can become overwhelming and feel impossible to get to the gym.
You may read “pull up” and grimace. A pull up is a fantastic strength training move. It is a vertical pull that is hard because it requires the entire body. Learning how to engage way more than our shoulders to complete ⅛, ¼, and all the way up to the full pull is an effort well worth it. I must admit, it is one of those most euphoric feelings when you reach your first! (For advice on conquering the pull up, check out this article). Until then, let’s talk about the power of the pull up band.
The pull up band was created to experience the feeling of an actual pull up without the load of our entire body weight to complete one. It is used in a variety of ways, like one and/or two legs hanging or strapped across the rack. It modifies the pull up to make them “easier” (although they are never really “easy”) while telling our brain we are feeling an actual pull up.
This amazing band can be used between meetings, during your workout, for your entire workout, and much more.
If you are traveling, how much room does it take to carry a band? NONE! How much does it weigh? Only ⅓ of a pound. You can use it in your hotel room or rental home OR take it to the hotel or the gym. You only need your body and your band to build strength once move at a time!
If you are at home, all of the above applies plus you can sandwich the pull up band between other exercises for a longer workout.
In this video, I introduce you to some of my favorite pull up band moves that go from fairly easy to a tad more advanced. You can purchase your own pull band on Amazon or at your favorite sporting goods store. Have fun!
