Bad Hair Day? Get to the Root of the Problem

We have all said it: “I’m having a bad hair day.” A bad hair day can often ruin our whole look, even mood, for the day. If my hair doesn’t behave the way I want it to, I don’t feel confidant enough to wear that certain outfit or bright lipstick I had in mind. But what causes a bad hair day? Maybe I waited too long to blow dry it after the shower. Maybe I put too much or not enough styling product in. But what if it was more than just that? What if your scalp is screaming, “Pay attention to me!”Our scalps have pores and hair follicles that get clogged just like the pores on our face. These clogs result in either too little or too much oil production, depending on our overall skin type, neither of which is good for our hair. Healthy hair has a normal amount of oils to keep the cuticle and hair shafts lubricated giving us shiny, soft hair. When most of us think about hair products, we think about cleansing and styling products. We use shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo, volumizers, hydrating creams, de-frizz products, and hairspray on a daily basis.  What we don’t often think about is exfoliation. We cleanse, hydrate, treat, and exfoliate our facial skin…we need to do the same for the skin on our scalps.Enter the latest trend in haircare, as seen above in this past weekend's Wall Street Journal: scalp detoxification and exfoliation. At Bellacara one of our favorite products for this job is Christophe Robin Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt. Immediately after cleansing the scalp with this miracle worker, the scalp feels refreshed and the hair feels substantially lighter. I felt like I had cut six inches off my hair the first time I used it.So if you want your styling products to perform better, if you want to use less shampoo to get the job done, if you want to have fewer bad hair days…pay attention to your scalp and give it a good exfoliation a couple times a month.
