"I Don't Have Gray Hair. I Have Wisdom Highlights."

Herringbone

Her·ring·bone (noun)

an arrangement or design consisting of columns of short parallel lines, with all the lines in one column sloping one way and all the lines in the next column sloping the other way. This pattern is typically used in the weaving of cloth or the placing of bricks.

You may be wondering how this pattern could possibly apply to the hair world, and the answer lies within the diagonal placement of the foils. Your stylist will place highlights across from each other rather than on top, merging the tones into an individualized kaleidoscope of color. The goal of herringbone highlights is to celebrate natural gray hair, by blending them into a color design of cool and warm-toned highlights rather than covering them up with root color. Herringbone highlights are the perfect way to embrace gray hair and the process does not take any longer than traditional foils. You can also expect to extend your salon visits by an average of two weeks depending on whether you want to grow at your grays or maintain your new of-the-moment herringbone highlights. This technique allows your roots to grow out with a softer look and outgrowth will not be as noticeable against the rest of your tresses.

I know what you are thinking, this look is only for blondes because their natural color is closest to the gray palette, but truly any hair color can achieve this look. Whether you are a blonde, brunette, redhead, or somewhere in between your highlights can be tailored by an experienced stylist to achieve that specific hue by adding in an array of tones from your preferred hair shade. Truly, going gray has never been more on-trend or chicer. Hey, if the iconic Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City” can look epically fabulous in herringbone highlights, then I think we are in a new era where grays are gorgeous. “And Just Like That” it is no longer faux pas to let that silver shine through in your lovely locks.
