Helping from Home

I've talked to so many friends about what's going on. Everyone is worried and stressed out. But there is one underlying tone with everyone - they wish they could do more. That's the beauty of the human spirit, in my opinion. Even in the face of trouble ahead, people want to know how they can help others. However, most are apprehensive to leave their home and I completely understand that. I thought I'd compile a list for our stylebook readers of ways they can help those in need in our community. One organization that is near and dear to my heart is Casa Chirilagua. They primarily serve the families at Mount Vernon Community School but are a neighborhood resource for many Central American families. They could really use some help. Here's some information from a recent email on how you can support Casa Chirilagua families:

  • • Purchase items from their Amazon wishlist and have them delivered to Casa Chirilagua: 4109 Mt. Vernon Ave. Alexandria, VA 22305. These items will directly support families in need. (They will also soon be announcing a tax-deductible Wal-Mart wish list so stay tuned).
  • • Donate financially to families in need. Contact their POC via email/cell at adriana@casachirilagua.org or 703-870-6258.
  • Donate to Casa Chirilagua. Your support enables their staff to continue providing for the community during this challenging time.
  • • If you are okay with a quick errand, they are also in need of food items from this grocery list that you can drop off at their Arlandria location on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm - 5pm.

If you are healthy and willing and able to leave your house, another option is to volunteer to distribute meals for ACPS students who would normally receive a free and reduced lunch. I'm signed up for a few shifts and just plan on wearing gloves and doing my best. Even in these challenging times, kids can't go hungry. You can also sign up to help deliver meals to seniors with Meals on Wheels.Hope you all are staying healthy and safe.
