How NEAT Is Your Closet?
With the changing seasons and sweater weather on the horizon, many people are taking the time to organize their closets! Whether you have a massive closet and can keep all your clothes, shoes, and accessories together in one space, or you have to tackle the seasonal swap, we've got some tips to help you take your closet from chaos to calm!
First up - invest in matching hangers! We recommend using a hanger that is slim, has some grip (like velvet), and has an adjustable hook. Black or Ivory will look the best. From there, you are going to swap every single non-matching hanger; this takes time, so make sure you block off your calendar!
Next up - categorize your items.... this includes shoes, bags, jeans, tops, jackets, etc. While categorizing, you're also going to color-code! For example, you'll get all your tee-shirts and put all the whites together, all the pinks together, and all the way until you get through the rainbow to black. As you're doing this, you might find that you have some items you want to donate, consign, or give to a friend. Set those aside, and do not let them back into the closet.
If you're swapping out your summer clothes, we recommend packing them in weathertight containers and/or protective garment bags.
Your shoes should come out of the boxes! If you prefer to keep them protected, we recommend investing in clear shoe boxes so that you can see what you actually have. You will also categorize and color-code your shoes in the same way you did with your clothes - booties, heels, sandals, sneakers.... you get the idea.
Utilize bins and baskets as a way to contain sweaters, scarves, loungewear, etc. If you're very lucky and have drawers built into your closet, then drawer dividers will be the best way for you to contain socks, undergarments, and pajamas. Label anything you can't see - trust me, it's worth the time!
One final note about hanging clothes - hang your clothes on the rack in the direction that has the front facing you as you "shop your closet." This is easy to do because you're working with hangers that have tops that will turn. Tops go on the top rack, bottoms on the bottom, and utilize the long-hang area for your dresses.
We love creating a calm, inviting space that allows you to easily get ready for your day! So set aside the time, put on some music, and have fun doing this for yourself!
