Independence Day Events In Alexandria

With less than a week to the July 4 holiday, it’s time to make a game plan! If you are staying in our community of Alexandria, here are some special events and gatherings you should know about.

Fireworks Cruise from Alexandria

Departing from the Alexandria City Marina, the water taxi is the best way to see fireworks over DC! This is a two-hour cruise with views of the fireworks display. There will be concessions available for purchase including beer, wine, soda, water, and snacks.

Mount Vernon's Annual Independence Day Event

What better way to celebrate America than with one of our founding fathers! During this patriotic event, you can meet George Washington himself, watch fireworks and a musical performance by the National Concert Band, all while taking a trip back to the eighteenth century. Events are scheduled for all day.

Alexandria's Original Ghost and Graveyard Tour

Appropriate for ages nine and up, you can follow a Colonial-costumed guide by lantern light through the charming streets of Alexandria’s historic district of Old Town. During this tour, you’ll hear ghost stories, legends, folklore, unsolved mysteries, tales of romance, and angry ghosts looking for revenge. Get a glimpse into life on the very first Independence Day! This one-hour walking tour covers approximately six blocks.

Fun fact:

Alexandria is actually older than the U.S. and celebrates its birthday in conjunction over the weekend after July 4. This year marks Alexandria's 272 birthday and the United States’ 245 birthday.
