Killa Cakes…and Killer They Are!

Two months ago we reviewed the recently opened Pendleton Carry Out Co. (see that review here) and since then our team has frequented the spot for on-the-go lunches and take-out dinners. We love the fresh, out-of-the-ordinary selection and that we are supporting emerging food concepts. So when we heard that a new cake concept was joining the rotation, we couldn’t wait to try! It is our pleasure to introduce you to Bria Taylor, the 25-year-old Alexandria native who is the heart and soul behind “Killa Cakes.”Bria is a skilled graphic designer whose passion happens to be making cakes. She has been able to marry the two in what she describes as, “Art meets Cake.” From the incredibly creative flavor combinations to the elaborate designs and décor, it is obvious how much pride and care she puts into her cakes … just as if they were a piece of art. After a year of working in the corporate world and longingly scrolling through endless photos of beautiful buttercream cakes on her Instagram feed at night, Bria decided that she could marry her art background with her love of baking and make cakes even better than the ones she scrolled through. After six months spent perfecting her skill, Killa Cakes was established in October 2017. Since then, Bria has crafted 10 incredibly unique flavors -- we are talking combos like The Crunch, a Cap'n Crunch cake with strawberry milk buttercream, berry jam and strawberry crunch pieces, and the Nelly Bee, a milk and honey corn cake with honey marshmallow buttercream, honeymel drizzle, topped with friend corn flakes. Not only are the flavors well thought out, so are the names! Two of my personal favorites are “Miso Tasty” and “Banilla Gorilla” (see all flavors here).[nemus_slider id="55416"]We were able to taste the three signatures flavors:

  • Snack Attack: potato chip cake (yes, you read that right!) with dulce de leche buttercream, pretzel crack, stout chocolate sauce drizzle
  • Killa Konfetti: confetti cake with white chocolate buttercream, blondie bits, and cake batter ganache
  • Coco Loco: chocolate malt cake with brownie batter buttercream, Oreos and chocolate ganache

It was a cake tasting like never before. With so many unique flavors coming into play with each bite, it felt more like a wine tasting than a cake tasting! I would take a bite and taste each of the individual elements Bria crafted together. If you want a truly unique and out of this world piece of cake, you must go check out Killa Cakes (and you can follow them on Instagram and Facebook). Buy a slice right then and there or contact Bria for your own custom cake.
