Home Renovation Project: Cool, Calm and Collected in Villamay, Alexandria

In early 2020, my clients embarked on a journey to renovate their home nestled in the serene Villamay neighborhood of Alexandria. At the outset, they sought assistance for their project from architect, Christine Kelley of Crafted Architecture, and myself, Kristin Try, to bring their vision to life. Little did we know, the unfolding events of March 2020 would challenge us in unprecedented ways over the course of the project. But despite the uncertainties, the project pressed forward, bolstered by the addition of the skilled builders at Bolt.

Our task was clear: craft a design plan that not only enhanced functionality but also encapsulated the essence of a vibrant family home. Amidst the whirlwind of managing careers, nurturing young children, and navigating the intricacies of a global pandemic, our clients entrusted us with their dream. Together, we forged ahead, adapting to new modes of operation, and meticulously selecting materials that would fulfill our vision.

Through collaborative efforts and several insightful meetings, we delved deep into understanding our clients' lifestyle and aspirations. The scope expanded to encompass various rooms within the home, with a keen focus on architectural details such as intricate interior trim work, and a beautiful redesign of the family room fireplace wall. This endeavor culminated in a space that exuded warmth, sophistication, and above all, reflected the unique personality of our client’s family.

In the heart of the home, a custom indigo blue kitchen emerged, adorned with polished nickel accents and warm wood selections. A charming breakfast nook, long envisioned by our clients, now beckons with artisan textiles and bespoke lighting, fostering moments of joy amidst busy mornings. The family room underwent a metamorphosis, boasting custom furniture upholstered in resilient fabrics, complemented by iconic wallpaper and curated artwork that enlivens the space and makes for a great game night or space to entertain in.

A standout feature of the residence is the enchanting double staircase, inspired by cherished memories shared by our clients. Bathed in natural light, this architectural marvel serves as a radiant focal point, adorned with a durable wool runner that coordinates with the kitchen's color palette. Each detail, meticulously curated, contributes to an atmosphere of refined style, comfort and youthfulness.

In the living room, custom window treatments and carefully selected furnishings seamlessly blend with the existing elements, creating a harmonious retreat. Glass French doors welcome natural light, while a thoughtfully integrated workspace caters to the demands of remote work. Throughout the home, a palette of serene neutrals accentuated by vibrant pops of color fosters a sense of tranquility and cohesion.

The primary bedroom and bathroom epitomize serenity, with a soothing palette of greens and blues echoing throughout. A bespoke bed from Serena and Lily anchors the space, while custom Roman shades and elegant drapery add a touch of sophistication. In the bathroom, a freestanding tub and exquisite tile selections evoke a spa-like ambiance, offering a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Sherwin Williams' designer paints envelop the home to enhance the abundant natural light that now floods the space. Matte black hardware accents add a contemporary flair, while gray-blue interior doors provide a subtle contrast.

This project epitomizes the ethos of "cool, calm, and collected," mirroring the resilient spirit of our clients amidst life's whirlwinds. It stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, creativity, and unwavering dedication to crafting spaces that inspire and uplift. As we reflect on this transformative journey, we are reminded that amidst chaos, there exists boundless opportunity to create beauty and find solace in the sanctuary of home.
