Monday Musings

We know the '90s have been trending for a while, and many of us have been, and still are, reluctant to let go of our skinny jeans. There are certain blouses and blazers that just need something more streamlined on the bottom. My happy medium has been finding tapered fits inspired by the ‘80s, a little baggy with a cinch moment to control the volume. Maybe one day a true wide leg will find its way into my closet, but in the meantime, of course, the trends keep moving right along…have you noticed Y2K making a comeback? Do you love it? Hate it? TBD? Here’s what our contributors think…

Elizabeth: It is hard to believe that Y2K is back. I would like to forget those trends, and oddly enough it is when I opened the store. I remember all the extra-pointy heels, cropped tweed jackets with silk camis, and of course low-slung jeans. This is the trend that I think is most controversial upon its return. It seems that most like a little higher rise. I am included in this group. I remember hating it when someone would lean down to help a customer (we do that a lot when it comes to helping with shoes) and let’s just say the low rise was a little too low. Well, they are back but a little different this time around. Not as long (hooray) and note that the leg is a little looser throughout, like this low-slung baggy or low-rise vintage by AGOLDE. They are a great casual look and an update to your denim.

Britt: The 90s comeback is absolutely a love/hate moment for me. Starter jackets were an iconic favorite that never truly went out of style. If you ask me what trend I wish stayed in the 90s, it’s cutouts in clothing like slits in the stomach or large round holes on the side. It’s weird. But Lisa Frank, on the other hand, school supplies and clothing in rainbow and brightly colored galore is back, and I’m here for it.

Adrien: The Y2K approach to body confidence may have worked for you around Y2K! You may have "sweat buckets,” or gobbled up “more cardio” as much as life allowed. You may have read every food label and cut calories as much as your hunger pangs kept at bay. You may have even lost sleep to get in that extra show, email or volunteer, or work project. And, yes you may have ignored your stress as something that is simply the way it needed to be – stressful. That was great for Y2K. I was 33. I was getting married and did all of that and more. How about you?

In this new 2020s era, finding strength from inside you, not the latest trend, is the ticket. Living strong, purposeful lives will bring greater body confidence than any cleanse, trend, or fad.

Amy: I think one of my favorite trends that I associate with the 80s/90s is personalizing notebooks and jean jackets with stickers and enamel pins. Maybe that never really went out of style but it feels like stickers are having a major moment. Only now stickers are landing on water bottles, laptops, and phone cases. The more flair the better.
