My 5 Tried & True Gifts: How To Shop Like a Pro for Your Loved Ones this Holiday Season

In this day and age where people are giving experiences rather than things, do you really need or want that same v-neck sweater from Aunt Mildred? What about the 10 millionth winter scarf from your mother-in-law that you’ll carefully store away in its box at the top of your closet to be forgotten about until you hire us to clean out your closet? Or what about that blouse your husband gave to you that is nothing you would ever wear in this lifetime or even the next?I am old school and do love shopping local boutiques for my loved ones. But just as I preach to my clients, I don’t want to buy something that doesn’t have versatility or staying power. So I thought it would be fun to do a list of tried-and-true items I have purchased both for myself and the people in my life. This way, you can put together a special and purposeful wish list this holiday season. #shopsmart

Bajra Scarf

Most of my scarves are from The Hive. They are a higher price point scarf (don’t expect a $50 scarf in this bunch), but once you have one around your neck, I wear them constantly and they add a luxe feel to even the simplest denim/pullover sweater look. One of my favorite brands they carry right now, which I have purchased for myself and for clients, is the Bajra scarf with metallic “splatter” details. Handmade in Nepal, the silk/wool blend scarves are perfectly lightweight and warm. I pair my slate gray one with a sweater as my “third piece” and also as part of my outerwear look with my puffy winter coat.

Current Elliott Muscle Tee

People go cheap on tees so I always think giving a more expensive one makes a great gift. Once they wear a pricier tee, they will know and feel the difference. One of my favorite t-shirts is by Current Elliott. My favorite style is the the muscle tee. I have it in gray and also a couple of graphic styles. They are always the most worn “base layers” in my closet. In the winter, I layer with chunky cardigans, and in the spring/summer with lightweight jackets or paired with a summer scarf.

Alicia Adams Alpaca Swing Coat

I purchase these swing coats for my clients all the time. I mean, can we say effortless weekend chic? I gave one to my mother-in-law last Christmas and she has told me that it gets more action than anything else I have ever bought her! I love telling my clients and loved ones that receive Alicia Adams the story of her Suri alpacas -- one of the world’s rarest breeds. They now run one of the leading Suri breeding programs in the United States.

Mini Madeline Earrings by Mignonne Gavigan

I purchased these Mignonne Gavigan feather earrings in the silver when The Shoe Hive first started carrying them ## years ago. I knew when I saw them that they would be neutral enough to wear everyday, but enough of a statement to feel like a signature piece. They are my most worn earrings. I wear them with t-shirt and jeans to blazer/jacket combos for client appointments to date night. They are definitely will be in rotation for holiday party season.

Annabel Ingall Tote

My everyday bag is my Annabel Ingall tote and I swear by it. I need a bag that’s equal parts chic and durable. It’s the perfect carryall for my laptop, wallet, etc. I love that the bag is structured with slouch so always feels dressy enough to meet with clients, but relaxed enough for weekend. The nifty strap tab closure keeps items secure, but easy to access. The leather is durable and I have wiped it clean before!
