The Ultimate Guide To Hosting and Entertaining

Hosting and entertaining can often bring on a fair share of stress. But, fear not! We've streamlined the entire process, making it simple and stress-free. By following this guide, you'll soon master the art of hosting and entertaining like a pro.

Step 1: PLAN! PLAN! PLAN!

Every successful event begins with planning. Start by defining the central concept of your gathering. Will it be an elegant dinner affair, a chic cocktail soiree, a whimsical-themed party, or a laid-back get-together? Once you've settled on the style, channel your ideas into a mood board using Canva (there is a free version). Mood boards are fantastic for organizing creative concepts sourced from platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, helping to conceptualize decorations, color palettes, invitations, and more.

In honor of the new Bridgerton season being released on May 16, here’s an example of a mood board we would make if we were hosting a Bridgerton-themed Tea Party.

Step 2: "The Magic is in the Details"

With your mood board as your compass, channel your creativity into the details of your event. Consider how to seamlessly integrate the themes from your mood board into every aspect of your décor. For instance, a Bridgerton-inspired garden party might feature menus adorned with Lady Whistledown's wit, a whimsical tablescape adorned with flowers and candles, and dainty Victorian-style silverware, plates, and glasses. Have a dress code that encompasses the theme and sets the ambiance with the Bridgerton soundtrack. Harmonizing your theme throughout the details will elevate the coherence of your party. Yet, practicality is key—anticipate post-party cleanup by ensuring your dinnerware is dishwasher-safe, your speaker is fully charged, and your linens are machine-washable. Arrange your furniture to optimize open and comfortable seating arrangements, ensuring a smooth-flowing event.

Step 3: Curating a menu and getting crafty with cocktails.

Crafting a menu can be overwhelming, especially when accommodating various dietary preferences and restrictions for a group. Consider alleviating the stress by enlisting the services of a caterer, freeing yourself from the burden of food preparation.

For your bar offerings, consider concocting a signature cocktail alongside a selection of wines. Simplifying the drink options not only reduces complexity and cost but also ensures satisfaction among your guests. Remember to cater to non-alcoholic preferences by offering enticing mocktail options that complement the theme, ensuring every guest feels catered to and included in the festivities.

Step 4: Check off your to-do list!

After all the details have been finalized and either the caterer has been arranged or you've finished planning the food and drinks, it's time to create a final to-do list before the event.

1-2 Weeks Before:

  • Purchase non-perishable items such as alcohol, drinks, and decor (plates, cups, utensils, etc.).

  • Collect all items you might want during the party such as cameras or a Polaroid (for people to take home), coolers, chairs, party favors, etc.

Day or Two Before:

  • Obtain perishable items that can only last a few days, like food.

  • Begin setting up and decorating the space.

  • Ensure you have ample stock of cleaning supplies, including trash bags and cleaner spray.

Day Of:

  • Arrange the drink stations and prep the cocktails and mocktails.

  • Place your flower arrangements.

  • Pick up ice for the party.

Part 5: Enjoy your event and take tons of pictures!

The most rewarding part of throwing an event is enjoying it with loved ones! Remember to live in the moment and not fret over the small stuff!
