What Is a Dickey?

I wish I had a camera to record the reaction folks have when they see what appears to be a long narrow piece of fabric with a zipper and then a collar or hood hanging on the racks at The Hive. I think people think we have absolutely lost our minds, especially with a price tag ranging from $150 to $300.

Customers will slowly turn it around and then peer over their shoulder to see if anyone at the counter is paying attention to them. I mean the cloth wouldn’t cover much of anything that is for sure. So what are these odd shaped pieces of fabric that obviously are not meant to be worn alone? It is called a Dickey and they go in the blazers made by Veronica Beard that are the cornerstones of their collection.

When I think of a Dickey I think of the famous scene from Christmas Vacation (one of my favorite movies, as my sense of humor is roughly equivalent to that of a 14-year-old boy’s) with cousin Eddie by the tree. Look closely: These are obviously an upgrade, but the idea is similar. They zip into a blazer or jacket and transform the look by adding a layer without adding the bulk. Many varieties come with detachable cuffs as well. Dickies can make a look more casual with a sweatshirt material or a more classic look with a cable knit sweater or anything in between. You can even have a leather or denim Dickey.

Lucky for us, Veronica Beard has sent us tons of Dickeys for our trunk show this weekend, along with plenty of jackets to zip them into. We can also special order other varieties from their collection. I always suggest starting with either their Scuba, Schoolboy, or Classic in black or navy. If I calculated my price per wear for my black and navy scuba jacket it would not be much. I have had them for three or four years and they look like new. I literally wear one every week, if not multiple times.
