ask stylebook: back to school?

Nikki: I would love to do my back to school shopping locally. Do you have any recommendations?

Elizabeth, The Shoe Hive: Of course you can shop locally. You might not be able to get everything but there are plenty of great things to get your kids ready to hit the books. When it comes to back to school supplies, The Variety Store in Del Ray is a great spot for all your pencils, notepads and other items on our shopping list. It’s locally owned and has a great selection.

There are also plenty of great options to make sure your kids lunch looks cool and stays cool. I recently discovered PackIt freezable bags from La Cuisine – they work like a refrigerator and keep food cold for up to 10 hours.

Then there are always the S’well bottles available at The Shoe Hive and Kiskadee. They’re easily our most popular new non-shoe product this year. The 9-ounce bottles are perfect for kids. They keep cold drinks cold for 24 hours and hot drinks warm for 12 hours. S’well bottles are durable, well-made and perfect to use as a water bottle or to keep soup warm in the winter.

Ivy Lane has some adorable personalized lunch boxes for the little ones. All the stickers I put on my kids items seem to fall off (or, more likely, end up stuck to the interior of my van) so this version makes sure they name stays put!

Then there is the clothing question. I will admit I have never been much of a consignment shopper until recently when I struck gold at 529 Kids Consign. I have found some of the most adorable clothes for my kids and they are just like new. My favorite piece of clothing in my daughter’s closet is a DVF for Gap wrap romper that I got for $12. I couldn’t believe it. Before you hit the mall, check out the great selection at 529.

529 also have adorable new accessories for the uniform kids to personalize their outfits. They have adorable hair accessories from Mommy and Me and the best socks ever by BOMBAS.

I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.

Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
