autoportrait: a quietly complex scent

This weekend we finally got a taste of Fall weather. It was sunny, yet crisp and cool with just enough wind to send leaves flying through the air. I was able to pull out my favorite boots and sweaters, but when I went to get ready I realized that I didn’t have a perfume that evoked the warmer, sultrier scent I was craving. I love the fragrances I wore all Spring and Summer (Kai, Creed Millesime Imperial and Silver Mountain Water), but I was definitely up for a change. Luckily, we just received a bunch of new fragrances in from Clean, Creed, and Olfactive Studio, a French line that just launched in the U.S.

After spritzing and spraying and sniffing coffee beans for 30 minutes I have determined my new favorites for Fall. From Clean I love the fragrance Skin. It’s clean and fresh, but not in a soapy or citrusy way. Hints of dewy flower petals wrap around notes of pure creaminess and warm musk to create a distinctive non-floral scent. I think this will be a great daytime scent for meetings and office work. For nighttime or non-office outings, I have settled on Autoportrait from Olfactive Studio. Bergamot, elemi, Siam benzoin, incense, musks, oak moss, cedar, and vetiver are the notes in this quietly complex scent which warms to the skin and begs one to keep smelling their wrists. My staff have selected Olfactive Studio’s Lumiere Blanche, Creed’s Fleurs de Gardenia, and Clean’s Warm Cotton Now that we have our new fall scents we can’t wait to pull out our cashmere sweaters and light the fireplace.

I have been a beauty junkie for what seems like forever, but before I did anything about it, I went to law school. (Yes, my life is a little like the reverse of Legally Blonde.) Then, I worked as a prosecutor in Sonoma County after which I moved to the DC area with my husband in ’97. I served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee followed by a year-long stint at a lobbying firm. You get the picture. It was then that I decided to act on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Finding my favorite beauty products proved to be impossible without stepping foot in a mall–the horror. So, I decided to bring my favorites to Alexandria. A few trips to New York and a flight to France and Bellacara was born in March 2000.

Located in historic Old Town Alexandria, for more than 17 years Bellacara has been Northern Virginia's preeminent boutique for high end cosmetic, skincare and haircare products. At Bellacara you will find premiere beauty products that have been carefully edited by the store’s owner, Angela Sitilides, who personally tests all the products sold in store.
