8 Great Ways To Spend a Rainy Day in Alexandria

Last week, we wrote about how Alexandria real estate picks up in the springtime. This week, we’re writing about something else that picks up in the springtime: rain. Winter is (mostly) behind us, and here come the April showers. Rather than despair, we decided to brainstorm local activities that make us actually look forward to rainy days. It’s all about embracing it, so get out your rain boots and umbrellas and read on.

1. Curled up in bed

Let’s just get this one out of the way first, because it’s tried and true and the most obvious. Pillows, blankets, Netflix, and, in my case, puggle snuggles: this will always be the best cure for rainy day blues. With so many binge-worthy shows and Oscar-winning movies to catch up on, there is no shortage of ways to stay entertained in the rainy days and nights we have ahead of us.

2. At the office

They say a rainy day at the beach is better than a rainy day at the office (which, I guess, is true), but our office is warm and inviting, especially when the fire’s lit in the lobby fireplace. Without the distracting pull of a sunny day outside, it’s easier to get in the zone and check everything off of my to-do list.

3. At barre3 Old Town

On a rainy morning, you’ll likely find at least half of The Patterson Group at barre3 Old Town. The heart-pumping, energy-boosting class is the perfect way to get that endorphin jolt that will keep you going throughout the day and generate a real sense of accomplishment. You’re sure to see friendly faces and feel amazing when you leave. Plus, our marketing gal, Susie, is an instructor there — just another reason to love it.

4. At one of Alexandria’s many cozy coffee shops

Killer ESP’s almond milk matcha, Society Fair’s chai, and Misha’s small, hand-roasted batches are some of our favorites in Old Town. Outside of Old Town, Grounded Coffee Shop on Telegraph Road takes the cake. Their decadent pastries, delicious lattes, and daily soups and sandwiches make for a delightful escape from the rain.

5. Get take-out from Faccia Luna

Trenton Tomato Pie. Enough said.

6. At AR Workshop

This DIY workshop has projects for all ages and is a great place to take your kids when they start to get stir-crazy after being stuck inside all day.

7. Eat sushi and tacos at Kaizen Tavern

Intimate, relaxed, and friendly with a menu full of all your favorite things, a trip to Kaizen Tavern in Del Ray will make your otherwise monotonous, dreary day feel momentous. This restaurant is very kid-friendly, so bring the little ones along.

8. See a movie at Alamo Drafthouse (forthcoming)

Ok, there’s a little bit of delayed gratification on this one — unless you want to go to Loudoun — but the wait will be worth it. Alamo Drafthouse is expanding rapidly in this area and has released artist renderings for an upcoming theater in Crystal City. Have more rainy day ideas? Let us know in the comments!
