why is change so hard? alexa’s story.

If your goal is to lose weight, you know the added pounds didn’t come overnight. It took months and more likely years of ups and downs on the scale. Not only will it take time for you to see results, without injury, it will take potentially this year. For most of us, it is a lifestyle change that is required.

You can take your first step by taking advantage of our 3-month package of individualized personal training sessions for $149/month. (One session per week.)* Email contact@fitnessontherun.net to get started.

Another way of tackling your body composition and overall health is to take baby steps. Consider this your “marathon” and not your “sprint.” Enjoy the journey.

Meet Alexa. She carried around an extra 30 pounds for 15 years. She got used to buying larger size clothes, denying she could ever wear skinny jeans, and gave up when it came to her diet. Many of the tried and true methods she used before simply didn’t work.

Then one day, her doctor said she was on the verge of being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. That was the wake up call she needed. We all have one. Maybe we haven’t wanted to listen. Until now.

From that day on, Alexa focused on two things: work and losing weight. Period. She cobbled together money, sacrificing some of her favorite indulgences and hired a personal trainer. She visited with a nutritionist weekly and kept to her metrics.

There were many weeks when she wanted to give up. She would go for 6 weeks and not drop an ounce. We would talk about how she is learning so much through this process. She learned about how hormones, beyond metabolism, can have an impact on your body composition. She asked her doctor more informed questions about her blood work. She learned she can actually do a “big girl push up.” She learned to take her rest days and even cheat on her favorite fast food once every month. She embraced the journey, the ups AND the downs. The process during a major life change has the potential to teach us all a lot about ourselves and how invigorating it is to take the leap.

Today, Alexa is 30 pounds lighter and much happier. She wears skinny jeans with confidence. And, yes, she still measures her food, takes yoga and exercises with her trainer twice a week.

For many of us, the journey includes hiccups like illness or unexpected work travel, or down days. It’s okay. Remember it took time to get where you are. The best approach is to take it slowly, methodically and have a plan. Baby steps.

  • The latest from Adrien
Adrien founded Fitness on the Run in 2004 out of her home. After spending 15 years developing her own personal definition of wellness and watching thousands struggle with theirs, in January 2019 Adrien founded Alexandria Wellness, the home for the Concierge Wellness Program and Corporate Wellness with Adrien Cotton. Over the course of 15 years, “FOR” was home to more than 1,500 clients, 25 instructors, and hundreds of inspirational success stories. Adrien is now-more-than-ever passionate about helping others view their fitness as a journey, not a quick fix. Adrien’s recipe for success herself has evolved from a rigid training plan of sweaty workout weeks to some days getting in her 10,000 steps, consciously breathing, her 7.5 hours of sleep and her beloved 5-Minute Flow. Now, Adrien believes the most important ingredient is making small changes for big results, even if it’s one new habit formed each month. Still passionate about fitness, Adrien’s clients appreciate her ability to make sessions seriously challenging without a “beat down”, a healthy mix of strength and metabolix work and ultimately helping her clients gain real strength. Adrien believes we all benefit from being curious about our bodies and our health and that change, or improvement, is always within reach despite what your “inner voice” or others may tell you. Adrien is bubbling with excitement to help Alexandrians learn the importance of a comprehensive approach to wellness, weight loss, and contentedness with yourself, and that every person has the right to feel good about themselves. Most days, you can find her helping clients with their wellness and listening to clients’ success stories and bragging about her twin 12 year old children and “fittest man in Alexandria” Bill Cotton. Adrien prides herself on her practice of mindfulness, meditation, and putting it all into perspective.

Alexandria Wellness offers achievable answers for anyone who is tired of chasing fitness and health without a clear plan, someone who has struggled and is not satisfied with their fitness and wellness or someone who is open to maximized healthful longevity and fitness along with healthful weight loss.
