Meet Alexa. She carried around an extra 30 pounds for 15 years. She got used to buying larger size clothes, denying she could ever wear skinny jeans, and gave up when it came to her diet. Many of the tried and true methods she used before simply didn’t work.
Then one day, her doctor said she was on the verge of being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. That was the wake up call she needed. We all have one. Maybe we haven’t wanted to listen. Until now.
From that day on, Alexa focused on two things: work and losing weight. Period. She cobbled together money, sacrificing some of her favorite indulgences and hired a personal trainer. She visited with a nutritionist weekly and kept to her metrics.
There were many weeks when she wanted to give up. She would go for 6 weeks and not drop an ounce. We would talk about how she is learning so much through this process. She learned about how hormones, beyond metabolism, can have an impact on your body composition. She asked her doctor more informed questions about her blood work. She learned she can actually do a “big girl push up.” She learned to take her rest days and even cheat on her favorite fast food once every month. She embraced the journey, the ups AND the downs. The process during a major life change has the potential to teach us all a lot about ourselves and how invigorating it is to take the leap.
Today, Alexa is 30 pounds lighter and much happier. She wears skinny jeans with confidence. And, yes, she still measures her food, takes yoga and exercises with her trainer twice a week.
For many of us, the journey includes hiccups like illness or unexpected work travel, or down days. It’s okay. Remember it took time to get where you are. The best approach is to take it slowly, methodically and have a plan. Baby steps.
