decorating parisian style…fabuleux!

Parisian-Style-Intro

J’adore the Parisian architectural details … marble mantels, high ceilings, and scrolling iron balconies. And I love the neutral palette of the French who prefer painting their interiors all white in order to maximize the amount of light and show off the elegant moldings and detailed paneling inspired by 19th century Haussmann* buildings.

It’s all about “mixing” when it comes to the Parisian style, and I love the uber hip effect! The French enjoy mixing old with new … like placing a flea market side table next to a modern sofa in a neutral tone-on-tone fabric. Layering is an easy way to create a mix of space that’s both distinct and eclectic. Parquet floors in a herringbone pattern are very common in Paris homes, so adding an area rug like a chic white cow hide is a fabulous way to create the perfect Parisian ambience. Hanging a chandelier above the dining table or in the living room is the simplest way to introduce a bit of Parisian style. And for a more organic, bohemian style, try hanging a chandelier dripping in crystals above an old farm table.

Chandeliers

Accessorizing a Parisian-style home should be as inspiring as painting is to a French artist. Gold is so very French, so keep that in mind when choosing frames, mirrors and accent tables. Think faux fur throw pillows, vintage wall clocks, framed antique etchings, a stack of books, serving trays, antiqued mirrored planters, and a straw tote by your bike (yes, grab your fedora, leather jacket and fringe purse, and use the straw tote to store your morning baguette when you bike to Le Pain Quotidien for your petit déjeuner). And for the pièce de résistance, select artwork with attitude to pop off your elegant white walls. (All of the following are available at Coco Blanca, prices listed below.)

*Baron Georges Eugene Haussmann was commissioned by Emperor Napoléon III to transform the medieval city of Paris into a modern capital. His vision of the city still dominates Central Paris today with several Haussmann buildings still standing with period pieces inside.
