What is dry shampoo and how do I use it? We get asked these questions a lot at Bellacara. Dry shampoo is a spray-in powder that soaks up the excess oil in your hair and on your scalp. Its devotees know that, when used properly, it is a time-saving, can’t-live-without product. But most people that walk in grab the bottle, simply spray the top of their heads, and use their fingers to work it into their scalps. Nope. Wrong.
In order for dry shampoo to be effective it has to be distributed evenly and lightly at the roots. Less is more or you’ll end up with too much build-up and residue, which will actually have the opposite effect, leaving your hair limp and weighed down.
For a light refresh, say to make a blowout last an extra day, we suggest first spraying the hairline around your face. Then divide the top of the hair into 2-inch sections and spray the roots where needed. Then flip your head upside down and section the bottom of your hair, spraying the roots where needed. You don’t want to spray too much product. Hit each section of your roots lightly and from a distance to clean and lift the hair from the scalp.
For a more substantial “wash” that gives your hair an all-over, shower-fresh feel, say after a workout, you must divide and conquer by parting the hair into two sections, front and back, aligning your pointer finger with your ear as a guide, then hitting each section as described above. Flip your hair up and brush lightly with a boar bristle brush. Finally, use your fingers to lightly lift the roots from your scalp. Voila! Clean hair is yours.
Those who could use a little oomph should look to Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo. For those who don’t desire added volume, we suggest Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk.
I have been a beauty junkie for what seems like forever, but before I did anything about it, I went to law school. (Yes, my life is a little like the reverse of Legally Blonde.) Then, I worked as a prosecutor in Sonoma County after which I moved to the DC area with my husband in ’97. I served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee followed by a year-long stint at a lobbying firm. You get the picture.
It was then that I decided to act on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Finding my favorite beauty products proved to be impossible without stepping foot in a mall–the horror. So, I decided to bring my favorites to Alexandria. A few trips to New York and a flight to France and Bellacara was born in March 2000.
