Fall Colors Are the New Black

My old Kate Spade sales representative used to always laugh after I picked all my samples for a potential buy and placed them on the table. He would laugh and say, “you buy just like Saks Fifth Avenue.”

I, of course, took this as a compliment. When I responded with thank you and a smile, he dryly replied: “That isn’t a compliment, all you ever pick is black.”

I tried to defend myself, stating that when I picked a shoe only in a non-basic color, customers always request the same shoe in black. He rolled his eyes and wrote my notes.

When the clothing store opened, the same thing seemed to be happening. I got a lot of black…oh, and ivory. I’ve found that as a buyer, it is hard to commit to a color because you sometimes just don’t know if it will work!

Well this fall I have tried to spread my wings and buy more color. It is always easier in the spring to add some color to the collections we carry. Fall can be a little more difficult, but we have tried this year and brought you wine, poppy, olive, tan, and rust. Okay, maybe tan isn’t a color, but hey it isn’t black!

I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.

Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
