Father’s Day: The Struggle Is Real

My dad is the most generous person I know and he never asks for anything. I mean NEVER. If we get him something, he wishes we hadn’t. There are a lot of dads out there just like mine who make the struggle to find something that shows how much you appreciate all that he’s done for you real. (Though there are never enough words or gestures, are there?) To make things easier for you, we picked a few tokens of affection that we think dear old Dad would enjoy.

Kitchen King

We have so many kitchen-inspired gifts, it’s hard to know where to start! Choose from special dishes, tea towels, specialty seasonings and sauces, recipe boxes, and a selection of picnic-friendly place settings and accoutrements. Take advantage of summer nights with a recipe book dedicated to the art of grilling. Everyone wins this Father’s Day.

Lillie’s Q Smoky BBQ sauce, $10; Any Night Grilling, $24.99; Jacobsen Garlic Salt, $14; Lillie’s Q Carolina Rub, $7.50; French linen dish towel, $30

Nautical Gentleman

Ahoy there, water-loving East-Coasters! We have dozens of gifts to celebrate dad’s interests and to help make home feel a little closer to the sea. A cookbook that celebrates the sea is a surefire way to get a good meal out of the deal. Win-win! Our Sea Bags and Sea Bag placemats are made of recycled sails, which makes them interesting, environmentally friendly, and durable — not to mention, very cool. We have throw pillows, books, bookends, and art that will make his nautical heart skip a beat.

Mini Wool Hooked Pillow, $25; Seabags set of four placemats, $60; East Coasters, $36; Oysters, $19.95; Jute handled bottle opener, $20

Outdoor Enthusiast

Celebrate his love for the outdoors by making the outdoors more enjoyable (for everyone). Our solid cologne is a perfect travel bag companion to keep him smelling fresh and remind him of the great outdoors. The redwood scent has hints of sandalwood, amber, citrus, rosemary, and clove, which will essentially transport him outside without moving an inch. Best of all, a recipe book that can accommodate cooking by an open fire will be a nice change of pace from the granola he’s been carrying around in his pockets. And when in doubt, you can’t go wrong with an insulated, reusable water bottle to keep you hydrated inside or out.

Feast by Firelight, $22; Shine Water Bottle, $35; Duke Cannon Solid Cologne, $29; The Great Northern Key Chain, $7.50

  • The latest from Amy
Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Red Barn Mercantile opened its doors in September 2007 with a single vision in mind: providing old and new to offer our customers signature whole-room designs at great prices.

We’re more than a furniture boutique and provide more personalized service than a big box retailer. We work hard to bring you the highest quality furniture and gifts, the most unique conversation starters, wall hangings and accent pieces, whether they come from off-the-beaten-track flea markets, or the latest designers.
