If you fancy yourself a craft cocktail aficionado or even just an armchair cocktail quarterback, then we have the event for you. Red Barn Mercantile and Penny Post are so excited to participate in the first ever Old Town Cocktail Week. From May 3 to 11, you will find more than 20 events in Old Town’s boutiques, restaurants, and historic sites.

The week kicks off with Art on the Rocks, the annual Art League fundraiser, on May 3 and culminates at the end of the week with a series of cocktail seminars at Columbia Firehouse and a Meet the Makers tasting event at Gadsby’s Tavern that features a hand-picked selection of Virginia distilleries. Get your tickets for these events quickly as they will sell out fast!

During the week, enjoy specialty craft cocktails at more than 20 of Alexandria’s finest bars and restaurants including Hank’s Pasta Bar, Vermilion, and The People’s Drug. Some of the notable events include hoptails with Port City Brewing Company at Chadwicks on May 8, a Macallan’s Whiskey tasting on May 10 at Alexandria & Company, Cinco de Mayo at The Shoe Hive on May 5, The Hour’s “Old Town Drinks” book release party on May 7, and Bubbles, Barrels and BBQ at Mount Vernon on May 10.  Visit to learn more about each event.

What are Red Barn and Penny Post doing you ask? Well, Red Barn Mercantile is hosting a very special tasting event on Saturday, May 11 from 1 to 4 pm. Meredyth Archer of MOTHER shrub will be in town, mixing up pseudo-cocktails and mocktails, using her very own award-winning drinking vinegars. Richmond, Virginia-based MOTHER shrub is new to our shelves, and we are so excited to have Meredyth in town to introduce everyone to her handcrafted, fresh, organic mixers.

And not to be out done, Penny Post is offering tastings featuring Sugarfina’s limited edition cocktail kits. On Saturday, May 4 from 1-4 pm, we will be tasting bourbon with boozy bourbon bears and rosé with rose gummies chasers. It is sure to be a very sweet event!

So, I hope you will join all the fun next week as we celebrate the first ever Old Town Cocktail Week. We’re looking forward to clinking glasses with each and every one of you!

  • The latest from Amy
Owner Amy Rutherford started Red Barn because she wanted to deliver a service — to provide both old and new in one place. No longer will busy shoppers be limited to reproductions or forced to shop multiple flea markets for the look or gifts they want. The trick in blending old and new, vintage and modern, classic and quirky, is balance. And Amy’s knack for mixing rustic antiques with urban chic has created a look that is both fresh and familiar.

Red Barn Mercantile opened its doors in September 2007 with a single vision in mind: providing old and new to offer our customers signature whole-room designs at great prices.

We’re more than a furniture boutique and provide more personalized service than a big box retailer. We work hard to bring you the highest quality furniture and gifts, the most unique conversation starters, wall hangings and accent pieces, whether they come from off-the-beaten-track flea markets, or the latest designers.
