I like to think that The Shoe Hive and The Hive are fun places to work — I hope so, at least. My favorite part of owning the stores is being able to work the floor surrounded by such fun and kind women. Most days, the stores are filled with a lot of laughter, brought on because we tease each other and have lots of inside jokes that are at the expense at one or all of us. One of them is that we all have our “go-to” item. This item is something that we all have in our closets to excess, and when one of us goes to buy yet another, we tell them “stop, you have a million of those!” Since it is our “go-to” in our wardrobe, when customers ask what to wear with something, it is not uncommonly the item we suggest.
We wanted to share some great street style versions of our go-to items, along with sale selections from the stores. We hope these great options will become what you grab when you are getting dressed in the morning!
My item, the denim shirt, is a large section of my closet. It is so large I decided to count. I have eleven…as in, virtually a dozen. I am in denial about the obvious conclusion that this is excessive; after all, I can make up a justification for each specific color and cut. I need light blue, dark blue, lighter weight fabric versions for summer, distressed, over-sized and fitted. See, they are necessary, and not excessive.
Katie: When customers ask me what to wear with a garment, my go-to recommendation is to pair it with white jeans! The response is an honest one; I truly believe everything looks great with white jeans. Elizabeth’s denim shirt or Madeline’s black blazer…and voila! Instant coolness. Being from Texas, white jeans are in constant rotation—white for spring and summer, cream for fall and winter. They brighten your overall look and keep your appearance “so fresh and so clean, clean!” Luckily for you, we have a couple of white denim styles at The Hive right now, both on sale. Whether you prefer the classic skinny look or a more casual distressed-and-frayed pair, we can help you create the look you’re going for. Trust me when I tell you you can never go wrong with purchasing a new pair of white jeans with each season!
Christen: One of the greatest things about working in retail is being able to wear jeans whenever I feel like it. I still clearly recall running late for my corporate job on multiple occasions because all I wanted to wear was jeans and I didn’t feel good in anything else. I have always preferred boyfriend to skinny jeans mostly because I don’t like to feel poured into my clothes; I prefer roomier fits. The beauty of the boyfriend jean is that there are so many kinds—distressed, clean, wider through the leg, slimmer (which is technically a girlfriend jean)—and they go with absolutely everything. Wear them with a blazer, a silk blouse, a slouchy sweatshirt, a button-up, a graphic tee…the list is endless! They look equally cool with stilettos or slip-on sneakers, and you’ll always be comfortable in them. In short, investing in boyfriend jeans is a no-brainer!
Penelope: “That would look so good with a cute t-shirt dress!” I love suggesting to customers that a t-shirt dress would go with majority of our shoes. Slip-on sneakers, chunky sandals, even a more formal heel, boots, and booties! Slip-on sneakers can be dressed up with a t-shirt dress, heels can be dressed down with a t-shirt dress. For fall and winter I even love an over the knee boot with a just over the knee t-shirt dress. The options of what shoes to wear with a t-shirt dress are never ending!
Madeline: The black blazer—or any blazer. These days blazers are not only for your workplace; they are so versatile they have become a staple in everyone’s wardrobe. Blazers pair well with virtually anything. I especially love blazers because they instantly make an outfit look put together, whether it’s casual or dressy. Put on your favorite pair of jeans a t-shirt and throw a blazer on over it. One good black blazer in your closet is a life changer! And lucky for you all we have some good blazers on sale right now.
I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
