How We Chill Out...Literally

Yes, of course, we all love the slower pace of summer. But, if we're being honest...sometimes? Sometimes the heat and humidity are just. too. much. But retreating to the great indoors doesn't mean missing out on any good times. Here's how we'll enjoy the dog days of summer...inside.

I have said it before, I hate the heat. My hair, skin, and clothing options just don’t really work. So when it comes to inside activities I have a long list. I will admit, though, my recent favorite is watching baseball. If the Nationals are on they are on our television and I actually will sit and watch. This is compounded by the fact that in the early morning, when my son and I are the only ones awake, we watch Quick Pitch. I know more about baseball than I ever thought I would and I really enjoy it. I actually am sad when October rolls around and there isn’t anything for my son and me to watch together.

Second to baseball I love a good jigsaw puzzle. I recently finished a really good one from Red Barn Mercantile!

We don’t watch a lot of TV in our house and it’s an especially rare treat for our three-year-old son, but lately I have been really treasuring the lazy late afternoon hour or so after he gets home from camp, completely exhausted, and watches an old time-y movie like the 1970s Charlotte’s Web with me on the couch. I realize how unthrilling this activity may seem but that’s the point! If you’re not running around outside, it’s time to crash and kick it on the couch. No judging.

My favorite air-conditioned indoor summer activity is going to the movies. My kids and I love them and are not ashamed to say that we will absolutely be the first in line for The Angry Birds Movie 2

My favorite indoor activity is making my home and now my retreat center beautiful. I have always loved making spaces for people to come, enjoy themselves, and feel uplifted by the environment. In my spaces I try to engage all the senses: colorful accents to catch the eye, essential oil to uplift the mind, something yummy cooking in the oven to enjoy, fabrics and textures on furniture and on beds to indulge in, music to evoke feeling and create an ambiance, and yes, I pay attention to the sixth sense, the energy aspect of my spaces. I like to clear energy with sage, crystals, and open windows. I also cultivate joy in my home because I know people can feel that when they come in.

I have a lot of fun things to do inside when the weather gets hot. Of course, it's always kid-centric. One of my absolute favorites is going to Paint This in Old Town. We will actually work on Christmas presents for the grandparents. It's relaxing and cool inside and the best thing about it? Checking off gifts months early.

Another favorite is Crumbs and Whiskers in Georgetown. My husband is allergic to cats so this is our chance to pet some kitties and enjoy some macarons at the same time.
