Just Like a Hallmark Movie

When Southern Living announced that Old Town would be the perfect “real life” location for a Hallmark movie, I wasn’t surprised in the least. These charming cobblestone streets, warm historic homes, and cozy eateries are made for mistletoe moments. It’s easy to picture a hard-working heroine have the perfect meet-cute with her soulmate over spilled Misha’s hot chocolate. Yes, I know it sounds cheesy, but if you can’t be a little corny around the holidays, when can you be?

I’m not necessarily one of those people that immediately tosses out the pumpkins for tinsel on November 1st. I like to give Thanksgiving its moment of glory and truly slow down to be thankful for loved ones and how lucky we are to live in this tight-knit community. But there’s something that happens when the first frost hits the ground and the main street twinkle lights shine on the store windows, adorned with red tartan, that makes me want to sing “Fa, la, la.”

I can’t help but be excited for the 49th Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend and Parade on December 7th. The merry energy of the thousands of people that line the streets, the sounds of bagpipes and drums, Scottie dogs, and Santa Claus is contagious. Plus, the Holiday Homes Tour is the perfect stroll to see all of the historic properties deck their halls, foyers, kitchens, and more. Ending the day by the waterfront, watching the Alexandria Boat Parade of Lights on the Potomac, is bright enough to make Rudolph proud.

You know what else makes Hallmark movies the feel-good tales that they are? The supporting roles. The vibrant best friends, wise relatives, and caring mom and pop shop owners. I feel like we truly have a storybook community here in Alexandria. The boutique entrepreneurs, the longtime restaurant owners, and the excited new neighbors that move from all over the world. These meaningful interactions and human moments make up the wonderful big picture that could melt even the Grinch’s heart.
