Liquid Liner…Yes You Can

I hear it all the time, “I can’t apply liquid liner.” I know why you think that. The liquid liners of old were these long brushes that never seemed to stay where we needed them. As a result, the finished product often looked uneven and smudged.

Then came the liquid liner pen. This was a vast improvement and with a certain amount of practice you could get a pretty straight line. The trouble with these pens was that you tended to have a thinner inner corner and then get a bit fat towards the end as you dragged the pen to the outer corner. If you tried to use the tip straight on, you’d get little patches where the pen jumped uneven skin. If you’re like me, you ended up tossing it to the side and grabbing a pencil you could smudge. For those of you lucky enough to know how to apply it well, your complaint was likely that the pen tip dried out too soon. Whatever the issues were, most of us gave up on it. It’s too bad though. The liquid gives a very polished line and the effect can be dramatic. It also tends to stay put far longer than its waxy pencil siblings.

What if I told you that there was a liquid eyeliner that you could apply? One that had the flexibility of a brush, the ease of a pen, and the precision of pencil. It exists and it’s this year’s ALLURE Best of Beauty Liquid Eyeliner Winner. The auto-graphique eyeliner by Surratt Beauty. According to Allure Magazine’s Best Luxury Beauty Products Worth the Splurge category, “The Surratt Auto-Graphique Eyeliner is like a calligraphy brush for your lash line, this pliant tip delivers the sleekest and inkiest of strokes, turning flicks, swoops, and wings into virtual works of art.”  We couldn’t agree more.

Since the product came in, I’ve taken each “I can’t apply liquid eyeliner” statement as a challenge.  After applying it on one eye, I then hand the tool to the unbeliever and ask them to do the other eye. They are always shocked that they managed to make it work. Inevitably, they have to have it. The best part? This eyeliner brush was meant to last. After the initial purchase, you just come in for refills. The brush is handcrafted in Japan and designed to far outlast the ink cartridge it comes with.

I have been a beauty junkie for what seems like forever, but before I did anything about it, I went to law school. (Yes, my life is a little like the reverse of Legally Blonde.) Then, I worked as a prosecutor in Sonoma County after which I moved to the DC area with my husband in ’97. I served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee followed by a year-long stint at a lobbying firm. You get the picture. It was then that I decided to act on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Finding my favorite beauty products proved to be impossible without stepping foot in a mall–the horror. So, I decided to bring my favorites to Alexandria. A few trips to New York and a flight to France and Bellacara was born in March 2000.

Located in historic Old Town Alexandria, for more than 17 years Bellacara has been Northern Virginia's preeminent boutique for high end cosmetic, skincare and haircare products. At Bellacara you will find premiere beauty products that have been carefully edited by the store’s owner, Angela Sitilides, who personally tests all the products sold in store.
