One Look That Will Never Go Out of Style

Trends come and go, but you, Alexandria Stylebook reader, are always one step ahead! You’re never be out of the loop with what’s in and what’s coming to the end of its reign in the world of fashion and décor.

You probably know, then, about this one thing that has stood the test of time, that is always “in” no matter what year it is or who is weighing in. You see it everywhere you turn in Old Town, and, if you’re really fashionable, you might even have one of your own! I’m not talking about a pair of shoes (although, side note: have you seen what The Shoe Hive has in store right now?!).

I’m talking about an architectural style, one that defines many homes in Alexandria and has a long, storied history in Virginia and throughout the East Coast: Colonial architecture is everywhere. Its characteristic grand entry, symmetrical design, and rectangular build have become familiar, inviting symbols of hospitality and home.

Other Colonial-architecture signifiers include columns supporting a central front porch, sloping roofs, dormer windows, and dentil trim. Various influences — Georgian and Dutch, for example — generate different expressions, like varying amounts of stone used in the exterior construction in place of brick, but all fall under the blanket of an architectural style that dates back to the days when Virginia was first founded by the colonists.

Several of our current listings embody Colonial architecture at its most luxurious. Here are some examples of this ever-popular, perennially admired style:
