One of this fall’s biggest trends is a throw-back to a classic: pearls. When I think of pearls, images of Barbara Bush with her chunky choker come to mind, or the country club look of the 80s with a single strand and a cardigan, or Chanel, of course, with layers and layers of stacked necklaces. These looks will always remain fashionable. But fashion wouldn’t be fashion if the designers didn’t hit the refresh button and add a new twist.
The most unusual trend this time is the addition of pearls to shoes. That is right, these gems from the sea are no longer limited to jewelry; they adorn the heel of Stuart Weitzman’s Shoe Hive favorite, a style called the “nearly nude,” and they even dress up a basic white sneaker. One of my favorite picks, a pointy toed flat, hasn’t hit our shelves yet but we be here this fall in a beautiful chocolate brown.
Pearls are everywhere in jewelry. Two designers that have added an edge to tradition are The Hive’s newest additions, Lele Sadaoughi and Daughter.
We just returned from a buying trip in New York City. I could have not been more pleased that to see this pearl trend continue on to resort holiday. This season, the pearl trend even seems to get bigger with its addition to clothing! That is right, pearls on everything and we could not pass up this chance to bring it to The Hive. So in June we will get denim with pearls, that is right DENIM. The shirt with the cult following, the muscle tee by Current Elliot, has been jazzed up with pearls, and this holiday season look for a sweater from Rag & Bone that we just couldn’t live without.
I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
