How To Pull Off a Hat without Looking (or Feeling) Ridiculous

hat-close-up-tart-dressSome people love hats and some hate them – it’s pretty much a fact of life.  I am 100 percent in the former category.  Not only are they practical for keeping damaging UV rays off of your face, they can be the perfect accessory to top off an outfit.  For those of you naysayers towards hats, I firmly believe it takes just two things to make a hat work:  a really great outfit, and the confidence to pull it off.

First up is our black and white romper, which is sure to make a statement.  This classic wide-brimmed hat with a wide black bow pairs perfectly with this romper, and adds a traditional, preppy feel to an otherwise trendy outfit.

When wearing a neutral dress, like the tan and cream Tart dress above, be sure to avoid looking too monochromatic with a hat that matches the color of the dress perfectly.  We love using the same color palette, but in different shades.

Since many hats are available neutral colors, you can either pair them with a neutral outfit (like above), or with bold colors:

This hot pink Britt Ryan dress is a showstopper, with a micro pattern for added interest.  This look is great for a cookout in Alexandria or on the beach!

Finally, if you have a flowy dressy, try pairing it with a whimsical floppy hat!  It is a very boho-chic look that is both functional for staying cool and keeping the sun off of your face, but also a great look for a summer concert at Wolf Trap!
