Self-Tanner Update: Cocktailing

A few weeks ago I told you that I was going to embark on a self-tanning journey this summer. My first attempt didn’t go so well. I used the Tan Towels and ended up with an uneven tan on my legs. I think these towelettes are best for keeping a tan in between applications. After that faded, I made attempt number two with the Coola spray tan. Again, the finish was uneven. As it was a spray, I spritzed what I thought was an even coat, but woke in the morning to find…not so much.

My next attempt was the St. Tropez classic mousse. I wet my applicator mitt and applied my mousse to the mitt. I then applied the mousse in even strokes and ended up with a perfect finish. The problem was that on my fair skin the color was a bit too golden for my liking. When I tan naturally, I generally have a brown undertone.

Attempt number four was the result of getting in the new St. Tropez Self-Tan Purity Bronzing Mousse. The scent was so fresh I just had to try it. I applied the same method I used with the classic version of the mousse. Once again the finish was perfect and even. The color was good. Really good, but I wanted it a little deeper. Being a bit lazy, I pulled out the Coola spray tan and sprayed it all over. Five hours later…Eureka! I had found my self tan cocktail. The colors are slightly different so they appear more natural when layered over each other than either one by itself.

It never occurred to me to layer different self-tanners, but I have to say…I love the result. Who knew that beauty cocktailing wasn’t just for mascara?

I have been a beauty junkie for what seems like forever, but before I did anything about it, I went to law school. (Yes, my life is a little like the reverse of Legally Blonde.) Then, I worked as a prosecutor in Sonoma County after which I moved to the DC area with my husband in ’97. I served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee followed by a year-long stint at a lobbying firm. You get the picture. It was then that I decided to act on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Finding my favorite beauty products proved to be impossible without stepping foot in a mall–the horror. So, I decided to bring my favorites to Alexandria. A few trips to New York and a flight to France and Bellacara was born in March 2000.

Located in historic Old Town Alexandria, for more than 17 years Bellacara has been Northern Virginia's preeminent boutique for high end cosmetic, skincare and haircare products. At Bellacara you will find premiere beauty products that have been carefully edited by the store’s owner, Angela Sitilides, who personally tests all the products sold in store.
