For years I have awoken in the morning with hair that looks like I’ve been through a tornado. Without fail, I would awake with a cowlick in the back of my head. Despite having showered in the evening so I could leave early, I would spend ten minutes wetting and blow-drying that cowlick straight. It was infuriating.
On a train ride home from a buying trip last month, I read an article about the benefits of silk pillowcases. It seemed that all the celebrities were using them and had been for years. They claimed that in addition to having soft, manageable hair in the morning, they woke up with no sleep creases and hydrated skin. It seems that our cotton pillowcases are wicking our nightly serums and moisturizers straight out of our skin.
I spend a lot of money and time applying those products. My pillowcase is stealing them from me while I sleep and trashing my hair at the same time? It seemed a sad and maddening reality that I would have to face. The very next day I purchased a Slip pillowcase; I had to find out for myself if this was fact or fiction.
The first night I slept on the pillowcase was transformative. I generally sleep on a down pillow. I don’t like a firm pillow as it hurts my neck. The only downside is that I sleep hot. I used to flip my pillow about five to ten times a night looking for a cool spot. Not anymore. I didn’t have to flip my pillow once. Each time I moved my head, I found a cool spot. Hallelujah!
I also noticed my skin felt hydrated. I was used to waking with skin that sucked up my cream as I applied it. Now my skin was moist and I could feel that my nightly product had been allowed to do its job. The biggest delight? I could not believe my hair when I woke up. No cowlick!
Yes…silk pillowcases are a beauty essential. Everyone should use one. Everyone.
I have been a beauty junkie for what seems like forever, but before I did anything about it, I went to law school. (Yes, my life is a little like the reverse of Legally Blonde.) Then, I worked as a prosecutor in Sonoma County after which I moved to the DC area with my husband in ’97. I served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee followed by a year-long stint at a lobbying firm. You get the picture.
It was then that I decided to act on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Finding my favorite beauty products proved to be impossible without stepping foot in a mall–the horror. So, I decided to bring my favorites to Alexandria. A few trips to New York and a flight to France and Bellacara was born in March 2000.
