This is a post I have been thinking about writing for days – but when I do I start to well up with tears. I’m sad because the beautiful ladies featured in this Street Style might not be working here much longer. Lacey Eigell and Shannon Donlevie have basically been my retail angels. They were a gift sent to me when I needed it most, last fall when we were opening the second store and I had that dreaded daily feeling of barely treading water.
Lacey came to us first. Our manager called me and said she had just interviewed someone who wants to work with us and would be perfect. She promised I would love her and what’s more, I’d be thrilled that she’s from Ohio. In case you’ve missed it from prior writings, I have a theory about Ohio: first, is that all good things come from there. Second, it is like the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon: I can relate everyone back to Ohio. Even Shannon, although she is from New Jersey, can be related back to Ohio because she is Lacey’s roommate. See, all good things somehow come from Ohio.
Lacey and Shannon have been with us since fall of 2016 when they both started graduate school at George Washington University. They are each earning a master’s degree in forensic psychology. Between stores, babysitting, watching dogs, and interning, these girls are always working. I have always thought that one of the most impressive things a person can do is to work herself through school, and these ladies prove that point. So not only do they have the strongest work ethic around, they are kind, loyal and just easy and fun to be around.
I realize maybe I shouldn’t be saying all this in a public forum. After all, someone might read this and hire them away from me when they graduate! Nothing would make me happier than to have them continue at the stores. Making this selfish statement also makes me realize that merely keeping them in the D.C. area, pursuing their chosen careers and using their degrees, is my best option so they can stay close as friends. So if you know anyone in the field of forensic psychology or criminal psychology you should hire these women immediately. You will not be disappointed – even if I will be.

I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
