It is hard to believe, but I met Kathy Martin 14 years ago when I had just opened The Shoe Hive and she started managing Hysteria. We became fast friends and had been known to close down a bar or two in our younger days. Okay, we still could close down a bar but probably only once a year due to the recovery time. Now we have to wake up and pack lunches and take kids to school.
My husband used to laugh and be like, what do you talk about for six hours? Everything! To say that I have fun when hanging out with Kathy would quit possibly the world’s biggest understatement. Yes, she extremely generous and kind, but man she is fun, and extremely funny. Going to market in NYC has never been the same without her.
Kathy is a fellow lover of fashion and all things beautiful. She is passionate about art and travel and this shows in her own personal style, as well. I think this is why she is always ahead of the curve when it comes to what is the next big thing. She was wearing boyfriend jeans, midi skirts, maxi dresses, and hats before the masses. She is the one who taught me about Isabel Marant before her explosion on the fashion scene.
When it came time to ask Kathy to solve one of the style dilemmas that I often hear about in my store, I knew she was the woman for this challenge.
Here are common statements I hear when folks hold up a leather jacket:
My answer is: we are all cool enough; you can wear it with anything, just throw it on; and you for sure can wear it as a coat but there would be so many opportunities lost if you don’t wear it inside as a part of your outfit.
I knew Kathy agreed with my philosophy and of course she styled our selection beautifully.
This Thursday we have a few appointments left with Kathy. So if you want an expert’s opinion, click the link below. It is sure to be a good time.
I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
