I aspire to dress like Alicia McCaslin. I have said it before but I will say it again: she always looks good. Always. She is also a walking advertisement for eating well and doing Pilates, but I digress. Even when wearing yoga pants on her way to Pilates, she has that little extra something that makes her look put together but also with a carefree yep-I-just-threw-this-on-as-I-ran-out-the-door vibe. Which she probably did. She has natural elegance and ease about her, which means her personal style embodies her personality.
I was in St. John years ago on a sailboat, owned and operated by a beautiful couple. They were so kind and fun and the woman just had this great laid back beach style. My friend Courtney looked at me and said, oh my gosh, she is Alicia McCaslin — and that’s when I was finally able to put my finger on Alicia’s ambiance. It is true that Alicia could live on a sailboat in the Caribbean. That is who she is, a bohemian at heart, albeit a really well dressed one.
When I started planning my Shop With a Stylist Days promotion at The Hive, I also wanted to bring the stylists in to task each of them with solving some common style dilemmas. I had just unpacked a new line of sweaters, Stella Pardo, and knew this was the perfect challenge for Alicia. Often women will say sweaters are too bulky, or they think over-sized sweaters can look too casual or too young. Well, Alicia is here show us all how to make these great sweaters work for casual to dressy occasions.
I discovered Stella Pardo at market and was drawn to the sweaters because they were so unique; I had never seen anything else like them. The designer, Cinthya Guerreo, named the line after her Peruvian grandmother, who was her inspiration and muse. She designs in Paris but all the sweaters are made by a collective of knitters in Peru using natural material like Royal Baby Alpaca and Pima Superfine Cotton. She is called the Queen of Neo Crochet because she is passionate about reinventing knitting codes, so her pieces stand out but remain carefree and feminine.

I spent the first part of my career as a copy-writer who helped elected officials brag about their support for entrepreneurs. Then I decided to get off the printed page and do it myself. The Shoe Hive made a splash on the fashion scene in Washington, and was named the region’s best shoe store in its first year. Fourteen years later, I have tripled the store’s size and also opened a sister store, The Hive. At The Hive, we offer clothing lines that are sophisticated and approachable like Rag & Bone, Tibi, Raquel Allegra, Ulla Johnson and Veronica Beard. We have tried to fill our racks with clothing you will want to wear all the time, elevated basics that are worth the investment.
Heard the buzz? The Shoe Hive & The Hive are a pair of luxury boutiques in Old Town Alexandria. Featuring both big name designers like Rag & Bone and Stuart Weitzman and smaller brands like AGL and L'Agence, our unique selection and impeccable service are what set us apart.
