Topical Melatonin Might Just Be the Next Vitamin C

When Zelens Skincare came out with their latest serum I was intrigued. Melatonin was a key ingredient. I have been very aware of the use of melatonin in products designed to aid sleep. We have several here at Bellacara. What I had never seen before, was the use of melatonin in skincare. Was this a face serum designed to help me sleep? It turns out no, it is not, it’s even better than that.

According to Dr. Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin who spoke with InStyle magazine, our skin cells have melatonin receptors and have been shown to produce it, as well. “Melatonin is actually highly lipophilic, which means it can easily penetrate into skin cells and impart important cellular functions such as repairing mitochondrial and DNA damage,” she explains. “It also has been shown to upregulate important antioxidative enzymes, which activates further protection against oxidative damage.”

In a similar article in Allure magazine, Dr. Dendy Engelman, a New York City based dermatologist states, “Melatonin stimulates your body’s natural production of these antioxidant enzymes during the night.” In other words, topical application of melatonin speeds this process up. “When the body is in a deep, restful sleep, the skin’s metabolism increases and cell turnover and renewal escalates.”

“The outcome of using a topical melatonin at night is an increase in your natural defenses to fight free radicals caused by UV radiation, stress, and pollution the next day, as well as repair the damage done that day,” Engelman adds.

So, can I just take a melatonin pill and reap these benefits. Again, the answer is no. Much like the effects of vitamin C, topical application is the only way to guarantee delivery to your skin cells. The peptides in Zelens’ Z-Melatonin will ensure the melatonin gets where it needs to go to do the job. After using the serum for just a few days, I’m sold. It feels amazingly light and yet my skin is plumped, hydrated, and glowing the next day. The fact that I’m revving up my skin’s repair process is the cherry on top.

Repairing your skin at night just got a powerful new ally with Zelens Z- Melatonin Serum.

I have been a beauty junkie for what seems like forever, but before I did anything about it, I went to law school. (Yes, my life is a little like the reverse of Legally Blonde.) Then, I worked as a prosecutor in Sonoma County after which I moved to the DC area with my husband in ’97. I served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee followed by a year-long stint at a lobbying firm. You get the picture. It was then that I decided to act on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Finding my favorite beauty products proved to be impossible without stepping foot in a mall–the horror. So, I decided to bring my favorites to Alexandria. A few trips to New York and a flight to France and Bellacara was born in March 2000.

Located in historic Old Town Alexandria, for more than 17 years Bellacara has been Northern Virginia's preeminent boutique for high end cosmetic, skincare and haircare products. At Bellacara you will find premiere beauty products that have been carefully edited by the store’s owner, Angela Sitilides, who personally tests all the products sold in store. The boutique carries only the best product lines – Kiehl’s, Jouer, Dr. Dennis Gross, Christophe Robin, Moroccan Oil, Bumble & Bumble, Fresh, Molton Brown, Skinceuticals, Smashbox, Stila, Mario Badescu, Clarins, Dermalogica, Kevyn Aucoin, Kai, Child, St. Tropez, Smith and Cult, and many more.
