The Turkish Towel craze has officially landed in Alexandria, although it started in Turkey in the 17th century. Turkish towels are oversized and made primarily of cotton or linen. They are and always will be an integral part of Turkish social life. Originally, they were used for a bride’s ceremonial bath, and later for other major occasions. There is also a strong connection between the Turkish towels and hamams–they are typically made available in complete sets for the head, shoulders and hips.
It was the work of the Ottomans to transform these simple pieces of fabric into veritable works of art. They created beautiful designs and developed new weaving techniques that are still used today. When I spent some time in Turkey a few years ago, we paid a visit to a rug maker and took a tour of a looming yard. The deal and creativity in each of the designs were truly astounding.
Of course, our Turkish towels are not hand loomed like the originals, which slows production down to only 3 or 4 towels a day! We carry a more affordable version, so you can stay chic, and perhaps spend the money saved on a trip to Turkey!
