Back To School Time - Learn A New Stress Relieving Skill

My daughter is finally back in school, so I immediately started looking at what fall classes I wanted to take myself - fitness, photography, weaving? Fall is also the busiest time for our classes here at fibre space. It is our largest schedule each year, with the most introduction classes and also the largest variety in intermediate project-based classes like hats, fair isle holiday stockings, and fall sweaters. New students seem to want to learn to knit in the fall when the weather starts to change. They are often looking for a stress-relieving hobby before the end of the federal fiscal year or the holiday season that causes so many of us so much stress. And quite often, they want to learn to make gifts for others before the gift-giving season is here. Whatever the reason, our fall schedule launch is definitely the most anticipated of the year!

This week, we launched our class schedule for September through November! Here are some highlights for those who are completely new to yarn crafts:

Introduction to Knitting

This three-session class is over three weeks, allowing you to practice each new skill between classes. You will have the skills to start a ribbed scarf and be ready to jump into one of our many quick project-based classes that are perfect for someone with the basics of knitting of purling. Most new knitters can complete our three-week introduction class and take one of our hat classes and perhaps a fingerless mitts or cabled scarf class and have several handmade projects done before Christmas.

Cost: $75 for three 1.5 hour classes

Tapestry Weaving

Our tapestry weaving class teaches the basics of making tapestries. It is a great way to use up bits of yarn you might already have around the house and makes an adorable wall hanging when complete. This class is just two sessions, and you can choose to get a larger, more robust loom that can be used for larger tapestries or one of our small pop-out looms that are great for testing the waters on this new craft before investing in a larger piece of equipment.

Cost: $55 for two 1.5 hour classes

Introduction to Crochet

We have found that many of us learned to crochet at some point in our lives but didn’t really learn much about the different stitches or how to read a pattern. Or maybe you haven’t ever had a hook in your hand! Either way, our introduction class is a great option for learning the basics, how to work several very common stitches and how to read a pattern. Students will make fingerless mitts (possibly several) during this three-week class.

Cost: $75 for three 1.5 hour classes

Danielle, owner of the fibre space shop, has been knitting since the age of six or so, when she completed her first project – a Cabbage Patch doll scarf. A Pittsburgh native with a degree in international development, she moved to the D.C. area to find a job and quickly established a career in non profit management and fundraising. For extra cash, she decided to turn her hobby into a job and taught knitting classes in the evening at area shops. With a heavy dose of sarcasm and a tough love style of teaching, Danielle quickly developed a following of students – busy D.C. professionals looking for a creative outlet. In October 2006, she struck out on her own with Knit-a-Gogo, Inc. – offering knitting classes and events all over the D.C. metro area.  Before she knew it, Knit-a-Gogo had grown out of control and Danielle moved to the next natural step – a full service yarn shop. In July 2009 fibre space was born and has been rockin’ ever since. When she isn’t behind the scenes with a mocha in hand, Danielle is hanging with her daughter or lobbying for small business needs at City Hall.
