Moviegoers will be thrilled to learn what’s coming to Crystal City in 2019 — and even more thrilled that they don’t have to wait until then! Alamo Drafthouse is bringing the ultimate movie-going experience to the area, one state-of-the-art theater at a time.Dubbed the “best theater in America” by Entertainment Weekly, Alamo Drafthouse offers premium theater technology, superior sound and picture presentation, full service in-theater dining, a full bar option at your seat, and curated specialty programming — and is co-owned by our amazing friend, Joseph Edwards, who lives right here in Alexandria!Geoff and I were so excited to be invited to last week’s grand opening of Alamo Drafthouse Woodbridge, one of two Northern Virginia locations locally owned and operated by Joe and his business partner, Anthony Coco (their first opening was in Ashburn). We enjoyed great food and drinks — they have 32 craft beers on tap, including 15 from local breweries, wine, top-shelf liquor, and craft cocktails — and a totally immersive movie experience, made more so by their strict No Talking or Texting policy.The Woodbridge location has already received national acclaim due to its pioneering debut of “The Big Show,” a next-generation theater experience offering Premium Large Format viewing, and their emphasis on giving back to charities. Right now, Alamo Drafthouse Woodbridge is partnering with the Fisher House at Fort Belvoir, granting us an opportunity to enjoy local and support local at the same time.Not calling it anywhere close to quits after a successful opening in Woodbridge, Edwards and Coco have their hands full with two ongoing projects. The Crystal City location is set to open in late 2019 and will feature nine screens, multiple levels, and a separate bar with a rooftop patio. This location will serve as an anchoring tenant of the forthcoming “North District” neighborhood. Their fourth location in the area is set to open on Rhode Island Avenue in Northeast D.C. in 2020.If, somehow, none of this strikes your fancy, we’ll give you one more reason to head to Alamo Drafthouse right away: it’s air conditioned.
