Chop It Like It’s Hot

Living in the DMV during the summer months means dealing with heat and extreme humidity. I don’t know about you, but my hair takes on a life of its own as soon as I step outdoors. Long, full, and thick hair retains more heat during steamy weather too. With that said, maybe it’s time to get on trend and “chop it like it’s hot.” Chic, shorter cuts are flooding Instagram and reminding us that we shouldn’t be afraid to experiment when it comes to our locks.

There are so many intriguing styles these days, but I’m going to narrow it down to three: the micro bob, pixie cut, and short shag. I was really indecisive on which looks to feature given all the show-stopping cuts, but these three stood out to me for their versatility. However, I will include photos of additional short styles at the bottom so you’re sure to find inspo for your next salon visit.

Micro Bob

Everyone is familiar with a bob haircut but have you met the micro bob yet? I’m sure you could infer from the “micro” bit that this is a shorter bob. It resembles a mushroom cut, where the length is close to the middle of the ears. This style is an excellent option for those who want a change from the traditional bob. The micro bob looks chic with or without bangs. It will instantly turn heads. I love the texture created in the look below, but keeping it sleek and straight is another great way to style it. The choice is yours!

Pixie Cut

The pixie cut first became popular in the 1950s, thanks to the timeless beauty of Audrey Hepburn. It resurged in the 1990s with iconic female actors such as Demi Moore in Ghost, Drew Barrymore in Mad Love, and Gwyneth Paltrow in Sliding Doors. The pixie cut is usually shorter on the sides and longer on top, creating a very interesting effect of volume and movement. We love the updated version below that incorporates a sleek, razored line. A pixie cut is so easy to style and literally takes minutes to look polished and flawless. This look is perfect for anyone who wants to ditch styling tools and just commit to a jar of texturizing paste, gel, or fiber wax. My absolute favorite styling product in this category is a fiber wax by KEUNE (available at deZEN).

Short Shag

This cut gives a total rocker vibe. Originally created by barber Paul McGregor, the shag showcases various lengths of layers that are feathered at the top and sides. These layers make the hair fuller at the crown and frame the face. The shag comes in all lengths, but I am loving the short version, as it is extremely sunshine-friendly. This is another low-maintenance style and is easily styled with a little volume mousse. My go-to product here is COLOR WOW’s Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer (available at deZEN). This look is literally tousle-and-go. The short shag below totally rocks!

And, as promised, here are a few other diva-ish styles that may inspire you to chop your locks. Hope to see you at Salon deZEN soon!
