Simple Steps to Enjoying your Outdoor Space

By Laura

With so much time spent at home these past few months and more coming up this summer, I've found time in my Fox Hill Garden to be even more soothing than usual. When my outdoor space is in disarray it’s not quite as relaxing, so today I’m sharing some simple tips to spruce up and maintain your outdoor area and maximize its potential.  1. Before you go out and buy a bunch of miscellaneous plants and flowers (and furniture), take some time to create a plan for the space. Make note of shade versus sun and what plants will thrive in the area you are filling. Be sure you are allowing enough space for each plant. If you need help with developing a garden plan, consider booking a virtual (or in-person!) garden consultation.2. Walk around a few times a week with clippers and trim off anything you see that is dead. This will encourage new growth and keep healthy form in your garden. With healthy blooms you can create bouquets for your personal enjoyment - we offer arrangements for local pickup in Alexandria if your green thumb isn’t quite developed yet!  3. When watering, water at the base of your plants, not over the top covering the entire plant and leaves with water. This will discourage disease in your plants which leads to plants that appear unhealthy.4. Make room for creativity in your outdoor space whether it's reading, journaling, painting, etc. Once you've cleaned up the aesthetics of your outdoor space, you will be ready to enjoy time outdoors! My personal favorite activity is working on my acrylic paintings on my back porch.   Click here to grab a free guide to planning and cultivating your own garden or here to schedule a garden design consultation!
