Our Favorite Balms For Summer

I don’t know about you, but my main skin issues in the summer are related to sunburn, bug bites, and sandal-wearing. I seem to spend most of the summer trying to repair spots of my skin that are sore, itchy, or even cracked and bleeding. (Breaking in new sandals can be brutal on the feet!) I have two go-to products that I keep in my summer handbag, and they are both back in stock at our shop this week!

Both of my remedies are made by Little Seed Farm. This amazing company is the dream project of Eileen and James Ray. After years of living and working in New York City, they realized their future lay elsewhere. Relocating to rural Tennessee, the couple became goat farmers, allowing the goats to roam free year-round. Soap-making began as a hobby at the suggestion of Eileen’s grandmother, growing the business through farmer’s markets and online shops. Starting with raw goat milk and other organic materials and packed healing botanicals, Little Seed Farm products are handmade and humanely produced.

Booty balm was originally created for a baby’s skin to protect and heal from wet diapers. However, this balm is magic for chapped skin and lips and works as a healing balm for scratches and cuts. My team and I have been using it this summer on itchy bug bites! It works like a charm. I also love it on a painful sunburn. It really speeds up the healing process and relieves the pain of the burn.  It is made with nourishing and soothing organic oils that have been infused with calendula, plantain, and comfrey leaf. It also contains organic shea butter, tea tree oil, and lavender, making it one amazingly wholesome healing balm.

Little Seed Farm Botanical Butter is a thick moisturizer with only four ingredients - organic shea butter, organic sweet almond oil, grapefruit oil, and vanilla extract. It smells amazing, lasts forever, and leaves skin soft and smooth. We’ve been using this on the rough parts of the feet that are taking more abuse than usual from wearing sandals all day. Pregnant women love this on their bellies to prevent stretch marks. I love it on my tattoos! It keeps them looking fresh and bright. It is truly an amazing moisturizer. Just a small dab of it will work wonders.

Stop by to grab these little jars of gold, or grab them on our webshop. Be sure to keep them handy in your bag, but don’t let them melt in the hot weather!

Danielle, owner of the fibre space shop, has been knitting since the age of six or so, when she completed her first project – a Cabbage Patch doll scarf. A Pittsburgh native with a degree in international development, she moved to the D.C. area to find a job and quickly established a career in non profit management and fundraising. For extra cash, she decided to turn her hobby into a job and taught knitting classes in the evening at area shops. With a heavy dose of sarcasm and a tough love style of teaching, Danielle quickly developed a following of students – busy D.C. professionals looking for a creative outlet. In October 2006, she struck out on her own with Knit-a-Gogo, Inc. – offering knitting classes and events all over the D.C. metro area.  Before she knew it, Knit-a-Gogo had grown out of control and Danielle moved to the next natural step – a full service yarn shop. In July 2009 fibre space was born and has been rockin’ ever since. When she isn’t behind the scenes with a mocha in hand, Danielle is hanging with her daughter or lobbying for small business needs at City Hall.
