5 Tips To Arrive Fresh After an Overnight Flight
Flying overnight can be great. After all, it saves you from wasting a day in the city of your destination. However, more often than not, you arrive and just want to get to your hotel room. The problem is that check in isn't for several hours and you really just want to take a shower and brush your teeth. So, how do you arrive ready for the day? After several miserable overnight trips, I have come to the conclusion that the answer comes down to two things: having the right toiletry bag with you and not caring about how you look on the plane. It's true.
1) Forget the Makeup
I've tried it all. Full makeup, light makeup, just mascara and concealer, and in the end I always wake up with splotchy skin or eyelashes stuck together in mascara clumps. If you absolutely cannot go to the airport without makeup on, I understand. But before you shut your eyes, take it off. I personally hate airplane restrooms. I cannot understand the people who head to the lavatory with their toiletry bag. Mine will never touch that counter. So I have had to get comfortable with doing my routine in my seat. That's where micellar water and makeup wipes come in handy. First, I spritz the micellar water all over a cotton pad and remove my mascara. Then I use a makeup wipe (Rilastil makes a great one) to take off all the rest of my makeup. Spritz a cotton pad with the micellar water and remove any trace makeup.
2) Hydrate
It may seem like a good time to have a glass of wine, but alcohol will just dry you out even more. Drink water and use a travel hydrating mist to spray your face. Follow with a serum and moisturizer. If you use a retinol nightly, skip it tonight. The air on the plane is drying and you need all the moisture you can get. I've read other blogs that say to apply a tissue mask on the plane. I know I said not to care how you look on the plane, but I may be a little too self conscious for that. Bravo to you if you can go full Hannibal Lecter and not care. If you're a contact lens wearer, don't forget to take them out. Red, dry eyes await you if you don't.
3) Wear a Panty Liner and Bring Wipes
I know it sounds a little strange, but unless you're going to have time to change when you arrive, this is a helpful detail. As soon as you deplane you can head to the ladies room. A breathable cotton liner can be tossed when you arrive and the wipes provide a quick, dry shower.
4) Use a Sleep Mask and Pull Hair into a Silk Scrunchie
Making sure you get a good night's sleep is easier if you can block out the light from the neighbor's screen or overhead reading light. And don't forget about your hair. You can end up with some crazy looking locks after tossing and turning on the headrest all night. Pull your hair up into a silk scrunchie. It won't crimp your hair, and it ensure it doesn't end up looking like a rat's nest.
5) Pack the Essentials in Your Carry On
When you arrive, it's nice to be able to brush your teeth, throw on deodorant, and change your blouse. Easy and quick makeup will look much better on a fresh face that hasn't slept in makeup all night. Mascara, some concealer, a light swipe of foundation (Surratt Beauty Foundation wand is super light and has its own brush), a touch of blush, and some lipstick and you are fresh and ready to go.
