Cork - Sustainable, Durable, and Fashionable

We recently brought in a new line of storage to fibre space - Thread & Maple. This Canadian-based company makes thoughtfully designed products for makers or crafters. Their cork line of storage items is elegant and functional.

What makes cork so special? Cork is a completely sustainable raw material that comes from the Cork Oak tree. Cork is biodegradable and recyclable. Cork is also lightweight, durable, and waterproof, making it ideal for handbags and shoes! As it is a natural product, the pattern and texture can vary slightly, making each item unique.

We have two storage items designed and made by Thread & Maple in cork:

The convertible zip backpack is so functional but also so beautiful. It features a convertible strap system that allows it to be worn as a backpack, purse, or cross-body bag. The main compartment opens to a generous and sturdy bucket pouch. It also has two small inner pockets that are great for your phone or smaller accessories. It also features a small zip pocket at the back to hold your wallet safely flush against your body. The bottom of the bag is fitted with metallic little 'feet' so it will stay upright, and you can set it down without worrying about scuffing.

The zip pouch makes a lovely cosmetic bag, project bag for your stitching project, or even works very well as a lunch bag! It has a soft fabric inner lining and has a large inner pocket for additional storage space.

Stop by fibre space to see this unique material in person. Then grab the Sommer Slide by Rag and Bone or the Dresdyn by Veronica Beard from the Shoe Hive. They both have cork features that would pair nicely with the bags!

Danielle, owner of the fibre space shop, has been knitting since the age of six or so, when she completed her first project – a Cabbage Patch doll scarf. A Pittsburgh native with a degree in international development, she moved to the D.C. area to find a job and quickly established a career in non profit management and fundraising. For extra cash, she decided to turn her hobby into a job and taught knitting classes in the evening at area shops. With a heavy dose of sarcasm and a tough love style of teaching, Danielle quickly developed a following of students – busy D.C. professionals looking for a creative outlet. In October 2006, she struck out on her own with Knit-a-Gogo, Inc. – offering knitting classes and events all over the D.C. metro area.  Before she knew it, Knit-a-Gogo had grown out of control and Danielle moved to the next natural step – a full service yarn shop. In July 2009 fibre space was born and has been rockin’ ever since. When she isn’t behind the scenes with a mocha in hand, Danielle is hanging with her daughter or lobbying for small business needs at City Hall.
