It’s Time to Plan Your European Christmas Markets Adventure: A Holiday Travel Guide
The twinkling lights, the aroma of mulled wine, the sound of carols drifting through cobblestone streets – there's nothing quite like experiencing Christmas markets in Europe. I went with two of my closest friends, and got to be their third wheel for a crazy trip of Christmas market hopping. These enchanting destinations offer the perfect blend of holiday magic, shopping, and unforgettable experiences.
Amsterdam: Canal-Side Christmas Magic
Amsterdam transforms into a winter wonderland that feels like stepping into a holiday postcard. The city's famous canals become even more magical when lined with twinkling Christmas lights, and their large light up displays, creating perfect reflections in the water as you stroll along the historic waterways.
Don’t Miss: The Jordaan district, especially the Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) area, this becomes a festive shopper’s paradise. This charming neighborhood is filled with boutique gems. For clothing, I love King Louie and Summum; for unique gifts, The Story Tiles Store and Marie Stella Maris never disappoint. And of course, no holiday trip is complete without sampling stroopwafels and other sweet delights from the local bakeries.
Between shopping sessions, dive into Amsterdam’s incredible dining scene. Grab flavorful wraps and the best lentil soup I’ve ever had at The Lebanese Sajeria, enjoy the jewel-box setting of Brasserie Marie, indulge in a more traditional experience at Restaurant Jansz, or savor fresh seafood at The Seafood Bar.
And when your feet need a break from the holiday markets? Treat yourself to one of Amsterdam’s many luxurious spas, a perfect way to recharge before your next festive adventure.
Perfect For: Romantic evening walks and discovering unique gifts you won't find anywhere else.
Düsseldorf: A Foodie's Christmas Dream
Düsseldorf might not be the first city that comes to mind for Christmas markets, but it deserves a spot at the top of every food lover’s list. Set mostly along the river with beautiful daytime views, the city’s market is a genuine feast for the senses—offering far more than traditional German fare. It’s also a fantastic place to shop for Christmas ornaments, with unique finds around every corner.
The Surprise: Beyond mulled wine and bratwurst, Düsseldorf delivers unexpected culinary delights. It has some of the freshest seafood, exceptional sushi (yes, really!), and even what might be the best falafel wrap of your life at the City Market. Between bites, take time to explore the city’s impressive art scene—the local museum’s striking architecture alone is worth a visit while hopping between markets.
Brussels: The Ultimate Market-Hopping Destination
If you can only choose one destination for Christmas markets, Brussels might be the perfect pick. This Belgian beauty offers multiple markets throughout the city, each with its own personality and charm. Picture medieval architecture draped in twinkling lights, stunning shopping arcades, and backdrops so beautiful they feel almost unreal.
The Brussels Experience: Beyond the breathtaking visuals, Brussels truly delivers. The shopping is exceptional, with everything from handcrafted ornaments to fine Belgian lace. And of course, no visit is complete without indulging in world-renowned Belgian chocolate—bring home boxes for everyone on your list (they’ll be the hit of Christmas!). Two favorites: The Belgian Chocolate Makers and Chocolaterie Mary.
Evening Magic: When the stalls close, the city’s legendary bar scene keeps the festivities going. Cozy centuries-old pubs and festive market tents pour local brews that range from crisp and refreshing to dark and complex. We loved raising a glass at Delirium and Lutgarde—the perfect way to end a holiday evening.
Perfect For: Travelers craving variety, unforgettable food and drink, and holiday memories straight out of a postcard.
Copenhagen: Fairy Tale Christmas Perfection
Copenhagen during Christmas feels like stepping straight into a Hans Christian Andersen story. The Danish capital sparkles with multiple holiday markets filled with cozy coffee stalls, warm knit goods, and pork sandwiches the size of your head—but the crown jewel is Tivoli Gardens. Each winter, the historic amusement park transforms into an enchanted kingdom of thousands of twinkling lights, festive decorations, and pure holiday magic. (The coffee was so good, I even brought some home as Christmas gifts!)
Beyond the Markets: The city offers far more than festive stalls. Wander through elegant shopping districts, world-class museums, and historic sites that celebrate Denmark’s rich culture. Copenhagen beautifully balances tradition and modernity, with shops that range from quirky finds at Flying Tiger and Welcome Gift shop & Souvenirs, to luxe scents at Rituals, stylish goods at Storm, and holiday treasures at the dazzling Illum Department Store.
Perfect For: Those seeking a truly magical, fairy-tale Christmas experience with plenty of cultural activities.
Planning Your Trip: Insider Tips
Timing. Most Christmas markets open in late November and run through December, with some extending into early January. Weekends tend to be busier but more atmospheric, with music, crowds, and plenty of cheer. I went in mid to late December, right before Christmas, and while it was bustling, it never felt overwhelming—whether on weekdays or weekends.
What to Pack. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and layering is your best friend. You’ll be moving between chilly outdoor markets and warm indoor cafés and shops. I wore thin, stretchy ski pants in Copenhagen to stay cozy and couldn’t have been happier. A jacket with a hood and leather gloves proved practical for all types of weather.
Travel Light-ish. Go light on the way there, knowing your suitcase will be full on the way back. Markets are irresistible for gifts, and I stocked up on chocolate, beer, local specialties, and plenty of cute European clothes for my nephews. To handle it all, I brought one large roller bag and two collapsible duffle/backpacks. On the return trip, I checked one bag and carried the other onboard—perfect for extra purchases. Pro tip: if you’re city-hopping, consider shipping a few treasures home to save space.
Getting Around. I flew in and out of Amsterdam (a hub with affordable flights) and used trains to reach Düsseldorf and Brussels. From there, I hopped a short flight to Copenhagen before circling back to Amsterdam for my return. I also visited Dortmund, which wasn’t a favorite, so I left it off this list. My friends continued on to Frankfurt and Cologne, where they spent Christmas together—both cities looked absolutely magical!
